who did you get out to quote for you ?

how old is the house ?

have you been up to the attic and what can you see on the underside of the roof ?

what type of root material is it (tile / slate) ?

have you had an independent trustworthy tradesman out to give you an insight ?

last question - have they already started work ?

if as said in your post is the case, that there is no felt on any of the roof, what purpose would 6/8 inches of new felt pushed up under the first row serve.......probably none, except to add on a few euros to tthe quote..

70 yrs old, the work is done but not paid for.
its a tiled roof. i will check the attic later. the guy who did it said i would need a ladder to see it properly. he charged me an extra 200 for this work. he was recommended to me by neighbour who knows abit about things like this

i'd agree with other poster - what's the point in just adding felt to bottom couple of rows of tiles ?

Had you any water ingress problems before now ?

By age of house it is very unlikely there was felt previously there but there probably was a caulking on underside of tiles - has this builder now compromised all of this caulking on the rows he took off ?

In order to put on the felt he would have needed to remove at least bottom 3 rows of tiles.

Was the house scaffolded for this ? How long did it take ? quite a big job to strip them off I'd say.

Definitely get the work checked before paying him.

    Why is that suspicious?

Sounds like a lack of insulation in the attic, rather than anything wrong with the work.

i would have thought that to but felting up the back of the lower tile you would have to move the tile and that would dislodge the ice and snow on it.

ice on the attic is a sign of good insulation in the attic

i think the felt on the las t row is if when it snows. when it starts to melt snow falls to the gutter starts to melt and if there was no felt could find its way into the attic but a dont see felt under 1 row of tiles been any good as the snow would be higher than that. in the states u have to have at least 1 row of felt.

Only if it is all over the roof, if it's confined to only the edges, then the warmth in the house is melting the ice! This water is is then refreezing on the exterior edge of the roof that is unheated.

Get ths checked out because whilst it could be a scam it could also be legit!! What I have seen is wate run down tiles and miss the gutter. it can happen for a few reasons: the overhang of the tile may not be enough, the bracket could keep the gutter out too far from the the fascia, etc.now if this is the case tack a piece of felt to the rafters and hanging it intot the gutter will solve it. Also you dont need to remove three rows of tiles. you would if it was slates but with tilesyour only supposed to nail every third row of tiles on the roof, you lay two rows and nail the third therefore you can simply slide up the first tile slip in your felt tack it and slide the tile back.

It's called drip felt, it's to make sure any water run off goes into the gutter instead of slipping between the gutter and house. We had it done to our house recently as the felt that was there had completely deteriorated (I knew this myself as I had been up to the gutters a few times).

u got shafted a stip of felt under the bottom line of felt is not a lot a good if the rest of the roof isnt felted. i say dont pay him and get a roofer/carpenter to look at the work to find any other corners that might b cut.check did the pvc fascia cover the timber sub fascia. and was there vents put in the soffit. theres a shower of chancers in this country at this work be careful who u get.

What right does he have not to pay him apart from the suspicion he might be a chancer (which itself seems to be based off the fact he suggested a bit of extra work). In my books the time to object to the additional work was when he was suggested it.
