VAN VRT?

After todays budget I have decided I can no longer justify my pride and joy car and its 28mpg Petrol consumption at €1.50/litre. I won't be selling it as it was my first car however I have decided to get a van instead from the UK. I will have to go to the UK as I don't drive manual and will be going for an Auto van.

What are implications of importing a Van from the UK? How much is VRT etc? or how is it calculated? I imported my first car from the UK back in 2006 but as it was a car it was a whole different story.

AFAIK the VRT is 13.5% of OMSP.

Actually you wont find a van in the UK. Very scarce unless its a Transit etc.

Van VRT increased in today's budget from €50 to €200.

If it's a proper van (left the factory as a van) then €200 is all you should have to pay.

was €50 when i brought in a jeep a couple of years ago , but think they have raised it to €60

I didn't catch much of the budget, was Motor Tax affected at all? I am doing this financial reasons mainly, I currently pay nearly €500 in Motor tax for my car privately and probably €1,500 a year in fuel. I plan to cut my tax bill to the government and fuel bill due to the lower cost of diesel and improved fuel efficiency.

As ROR said its 200 from today. I think you are wasting yor time going to the UK unless its a very specific van you want. Dont forget about the whole taxing of vans for private use etc etc.

BCA or british car auctions , had a load of vw caddys and citroen berlingos up last month. No end to the amount of vans available over there.

What prices have they been making ?

Remember that van prices are plus vat at BCA, and their fees are fairly steep.

I spent a good bit of time over and back to different BCA sites during 07 and 08 and never saw value in vans.

On the other hand, I have seen auctions in northern Ireland selling Dublin registered vans to NI buyers ... that says something !

Looking for a new type Citroen Dispatch for someone at the moment. A 08, 1.6HDi is costing me 6950 stg + vat in the North, but I can sell a 07, 2.0HDi, sourced in Dublin for 7000 euro including vat (obviously costing me less than that).

Do you know if it gone up to 13.5% or if it's just €200 euro now?

I heard a rumour that the vrt was going up to 13.5% for commercials allright, but no word of it in the budget today only the increase from 50 to 200 euro,

Anyone know what the vrt would be to bring through a commercial x5 or x6?

Would it be 200euro now or 13.5%?

    Thanks

X5 would be 200 from now. The 13.5 is on the likes of a Golf van.

Didnt really look into prices as i was there to collect a car on behalf of a friend. Caddys looked really mint , with no scuffs or dints in panels. The only thing that would turn me off is mph instead of kph. Suppose you would get used to it.

    That's not correct.
    It's still €50.

Higher rate (€200) is coming into force on 1 May 2011.

OP I can't really see how do you want to make savings by switching car to van.
Van is going to be more expensive to tax. More expensive to maintain. It's it's a small van, VRT will be 13.5% so it'll be expensive.
If it's a big van VRT will be only €50, but big vans won't make really any savining on fuel, as their MPG wouldn't be better than in your car.

You you want to cut spending on your vehicle, just get a small and cheaper to maintin vehicle.
Maybe something like Fiat Panda 1.3 diesel.

All I can find on ROS is a 3500kg limit on the 13.5% which would leave the transporter at 13.5% too. Don't think that's right....

If its manufactured as a van its €50 (€200)

I will get the VAT back on the Diesel and if it goes any higher than €1.40 - €1.45 I might look into a Vegetable Oil conversion. The Motor tax will be cheaper, Fuel costs and the added advantage of having a van. I wouldn't be caught in Fiat Panda dead tbh!!

But if you tax it as commercial, you won't be able to use it for any private purposes.

The Op is clearly intending to lower all costs associated with motoring, including his motor tax.

OP is seemingly registered for Vat so he should be ok.

I can vouch (imo) changing from a low mpg to a small van makes big savings if you do reasonable mileage.....

Celica to a Caddy van for work

Tax savings + Insurance savings + service cost savings + fuel savings...all add up...

But finding a good van in the UK can be difficult but they are out there.....I ended up getting a clean one here but did take me a while....

    Good luck with the searching....

For some reason I can't see it happening that there's going to be a tax inspector outside every shop to see whether a van driver pops in for a litre of milk and a loaf of bread on the way home from work or at every school gate to watch whether a parent in a van drops of a child before heading out to do a job.

If that rule would be 100% enforced every commercial vehicle should be taxed privately because nobody is capable to segregate private and professional life 100%. Imagine a lorry driver pulling in to a garage forecourt getting €500 worth of diesel in the lorry and buying his lunch from the deli counter. You can argue that buying lunch is not a professional activity though he drove to the garage in a lorry.....
