hi, was on to sky earlier this eve and apparently i need a new viewing card. the prob is that once they send a new one out they cancel the old one so i'm without any channels till i get a new one in the post...with the weather the way it is i cant see the card arriving for a week...do they really turn off old card straight away?? no soaps for a few days

As soon as you put the new card in and contact Sky to activate it the old card is deactivated so you're safe enough 'til then.

Either way ITV, BBC and channel 4 are all FTA so you won't miss any of the main soaps!

Op, what problem are you having and why do they say you need a new card?

hi kbell, just about to watch x factor results on sun eve and the screen goes blue wth "insert viewing card" message. before i had a chance to move off couch the message changed to "initialising new viewing card" and all returned to normal. unfortunately it keeps happening since, could be fine for hours and then it could happen 4 times in one hour???
i obviously did the plugging out for 5 mins thing and rang sky yest eve 3 times, we tried rebooting system etc and it still kept happening. in the end they said i need new card but as soon as i request a new one i'll have no channels till i recieve new card and i can ask for a credit to be put on my account for the days i have no channels.

Could you get your hands on another box for a few days and try that. The problem could be the card reader in your box.

I thought the cards are paired with the boxes, can you swap cards around or can you just ring them and get them to change this?

Yup the cards are paired to the boxes, if you put your card into another box and reboot, you'll be able to unlock all the channels, bar premium sports and movies( not sure about setanta espn etc..)
To view the premium channels you need to ring sky and get the card paired up to the new box.
This practice however will be frowned upon from sky if you say start doing it every sat to watch boxing down at a mates house.
But from the op's point of view, it would eliminate a faulty card if his/her card was to work flawlessly in another box.

thanks for that bit of advice, have an old sky box with no card in the kitchen. rang sky and they paired it with that one...no joy, card is fecked...
this guy also said that they'd cancel this card before sending out new
    card
