i know that today the budget has said that diesel is going up by 2c a litre i thought i would fill up before the price hike.
i went to my usual filling station in loughrea, Co. Galway and saw that the price had gone up by 2c since i last filled up ( 5 days ago) so i thought they where being abit cheeky by putting the prices up before midnight!
but when i asked in store they said no they were going up by another 2c in the morning!!!!
i checked my recipts and ...............
on the 26/11/2010 the diesel was 1.25.9
on the 02/12/2010 the diesel was 1.27.9
on the 07/12/2010 the diesel was 1.29.9!!
and in the morning it will be 1.31.9!!!
i wouldnt mind but that kind of price hike in the space of 2 weeks is crazy esspecially when there is another filling station directly opposite this one and his diesel is 1.22.9 ( in the morning 1.25.9).

i thought we had enough trouble with the government ripping us off with out the filling stations doing the same thing as well!!!!!!!

rant over sorry for the long post had to get it off my chest.

    regards James

Absolutely amazed - went to Cork at 2pm today, petrol in all stations we saw on the way was 134.9. By 4.30pm it was up to 135.9!! .. Apparently all prices went up at 4pm today, only to go up again tonight!! Oh, and by the way, it was 'only' 130.9 on Saturday!!

all that proves is that they are all ripping us off lol id like to know how the other lad can do it for 1.22.9 ???

but surly that amount of price hikes in 2 weeks cant be right?

they said in the budget that they left fags and booze alone as they dont want the black market to get out of hand. why do they think so mny people are running on green diesel??? i know i spend more on diesel then i do on smokes and booze put together!

They have done it everywhere the robbers. In Longford petrol went up 4-5 cent from Sunday to Monday in stations right beside each other on the Dublin Road.

Cosy little cartels we have in this country.

that's exactly the problem. A few garage owners on the motors forum are always harping on about margins being non existent but when you see price gouging like the above examples it proves otherwise.

Fuel prices usually goes up by a few cent around December as heating demands increases prices; a cold snap also spikes the price up. The tax hike won't help it either and yes, I filled up as well :)

Well, I think the petrol stations have been rumbled. Cheating gits.

I also noticed the prices go up significantly since the weekend (4c+).
This morning I was expecting to see the prices shoot up to close to €1.40 but NO - they went up by maybe a penny. I was wondering - did the government delay the introduction till tonight maybe, but then Newstalk mentioned that loads of garages had pumped up their prices over the last few days in anticipation.

    Greedy, opportunistic, gits.

Well duty will already be paid on the fuel in the tanks so should only go up once thats gone and the next delivery arrives (in theory)

several stations in tipp seem to have put up their price mon night/tuesday morn.
Me thinks it's time for a protest, I for one will stop buying snacks/groceries in my local station.

Some (or possibly all) of the Topaz stations in Galway City had increased their petrol prices to 137.9 before the government increase was announced. 141.9 now - crazy!! Many other stations are 139.9 since the government increase. Topaz in Galway always seem to be a couple of cents more expensive than other filling stations. I think they have too much of the market share here and not enough competition.

Yes, petrol stations are a rip off, but why don't you go to the other guy if he's cheaper?

you should go a bit further south in connemara its 136.9 and thats before the price hike last night. Unfortunately lack of compition makes the little man greedy

Breezer i went to the other guy today and will go there from now on !!! i just cant believe the cheek of the topaz station when its sooooo much cheaper over the road. but hey what can we do we are only numbers and ATM's at the end of the day as far as the government and the filling station owners are concerned.

While obviously it is disgusting to see the retailers rip their customers off in this way (in Portlaoise my local was 135.9 at 4pm on Tuesday, 137.9 when i drove by at 5pm and, unbelievably, 142.9 on Wednesday - 7c increase in less than 24hours), my major gripe is that it seems to be so co-ordinated around the country and across all petrol retailers. While there are a minority of petrol retailers who only passed on the government increase, there is no doubt in my mind that the industry in general made a calculated decision to lump in price increases to correspond to the budget, with the knowledge that the government will take the heat and not them.

Although convenient at times, I have decided that from yesterday forth, I will only buy petrol from these garages (and will obviously try to find the cheapest) and will no longer purchase any groceries, confectionary, lottery, etc. from these establishments.

They wouldn't do it if people weren't paying it. Obviously people are still going there, which to me defies logic, but there you go. Out of interest is the cheaper one an independent dealer or a big company?

Seen the same in Dublin today. Gone up more than 4 cents. Its a blatent rip off and these places should be avoided if possible .

This was flagged a few weeks ago as an increase in wholesale prices:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056102430

The 3-4c increase would be seen at different times depending on when the garage last filled their tanks afaik.

Add this to the 4c increase in the budget and you'll see a circa 8c increase in Petrol.

If your local station increased more than that 8c, I'd say they're ripping you off. Otherwise you're probably ok.

It is well known that Galway is, for some reason, more expensive for petrol than large tracts of Ireland.

I agree! I will stop buying newspapers, sandwiches, coffees and cans of Red Bull from these establishments - from now on I will buy petrol and only petrol (unless I have the Ma's car - its diesel)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,110 ✭✭✭KevR

142.9 for petrol in at least two of the Topazs in the city now..

Yes indeed. Since I moved to Galway I have certainly noticed an incredible difference in the price of fuel. This seems to be more prevalent in the city me thinks. Go to any station in the city centre and compare the price to that of ballinasloe for example where for some unknown reason it is much cheaper. And the bloody stuff comes into Galway city and has to be delivered to Ballinalsoe! It's crazy. Go green for Gormley and his like:D

Not to detract from the line but has anyone ever come across this?
At a pre pay pump, paid the guy in the shop 30.00 euro.Went out and the "pump" gave me 36.81 euro.
Needless to say I went on my merry way.
