Which round works best with Marlin 917 .17 hmr, mainly for shooting rabbits at 150 yards and foxes if they appear??

go with a 17gr vmax, they're more accurate than the hollow point rounds and more destructive which is good for the foxes. try and get headshots on the bunnies though or you wont have much meat for the pot

How effective are they on foxes and at what range?

150 yds would be what I'd recommend. have taken them further but only after a lot of practise on bunnies and corvids beforehand.

17gr, vmax is all I use in mine, they usually drop on the spot or only take a couple of steps before dieing.I found that the 20gr solid ones just punched holes straight through the foxes and allowed them to run a good bit before dropping.

I tried them and found them to do the same. 17gr vmax does the job :D

At a distance like that with that rifle,,would you be aiming at a certain place with a fox???? like head, shoulder etc.??.

with the rimfires i think its all about shot placement from even 50 yards. foxes have run 300 yards+ with a .22mag to the heart. but you certainly would have to aim for the heart or head. anything else would be inhumane in my opinion

    What he said.

Head or heart/lung shot is only way to go, we're after humane kills every time.

no point in firing at a fox and hitting it in the belly and letting it probably suffer for a few days and die slowly.

whats the neck shot like on a fox? never tried it would you break his neck or cut the windpipe or main artery ?

Never tried a neck shot on a fox but tbh why would you bother ? Neck shots are used on deer to minimise meat damage compared to a chest shot.

With the .17 being such a small bullet wouldnt think you could guarantee hitting the spinal column with a neck shot.

I shoot Federal 17 gr vmax @ €19 per box, how does this brand compare to others?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭kildare.17hmr

I only use hornady 17gr vmax and have only had one or 2 foxes take a couple of steps. I alway take chest shots. like another poster said plenty of practice on bunnies first and when your confident with your shot placement then go for foxes

i found the federal and hornady rounds to be equally accurate and had the same zero in my old cz, but €19 sounds expensive for federal ammo.
i used to pay €16 euro a box for federals and €20 a box for hornadys, and that was up until this august, i traded up to a 223 since then

hit a fox in the neck once wt 22mag and dropped like a stone not one more move out of him! great job but you would want good accuracy! he was in near when i shot mine and was an easy target

i shot a fox in the neck not so long ago he went down like a stone:D:D

it was a .223 at 17 yards, that might have something to do with it ;)
