Employers should be penalised for not replying to your job query

I think that employers should be penalised for not replying to people job hunting. Unemployed people should be allowed to make official complaints to the social welfare about employers who do not bother their asses to reply to their job queries. The onus is always on the jobless to get proof that they are actively seeking work, so why is this also not the other way around where an employer can be penalised for not been courteous to the job hunter. I want a law brought in that allows for this, capitalism should not be allowed to get away with this.

Best of luck with that. It is of course good manners to reply, but the levels of demand at present far outweigh supply. Thus, the ability to respond is limited in most instances.

Perhaps you might explain what on earth Social Welfare could legally do to assist you? Other than perhaps check (out of the goodness of their hearts) that you may or may not have applied for a job.

You might also suggest to the reading populous what you mean by capitalism not getting away with this? If there was a socialist or communist structure you could kiss goodbye to what you're after.

A capitalist model is far from perfect, but if it works people generally tend to 'work' too.

Sorry for asking you to validate your points but I am at a loss how to resolve it in the current climate.

The problem is SW want proof you are looking for work. You say I applied to X, Y and Z. SW then say prove it. Without a PFO you are stuffed.

The problem is that SW are still stuck in the past. They still want paper PFOs and since many people don't even bother to repsond the SW will see the claimant as telling lies.

SW want enough proof to demonstrate you are making an effort. PFOs aren't the only way to do that.

OP, consider keeping a list of jobs and employers you have tried and print off any e-mails sent.

I suppose I came across as a bit Marxist in my rant, and it is a rant. But like haddockman said the sw want proof. I applied for about 70 odd jobs in the newspaper and magazine industry over the last two months, now thats not a lot compared to some people, but I only got about 3 or 4 replies which is plain ridiculous. So what do I show the sw, do I also print out my email inquiries to the ones that didnt get answered. The reason I went on about capitalism was the recent programmes on TV (I know this should be in the television thread also) such as Fade Street and The Apprentice that shows all these people with their job interviews and working, with is pure BULL, there is no jobs so why invent them on telly. Im a graduate of journalism and in the seven months I have been job hunting I havent received one invitation for a job interview. So what do I do, do I have a sex change, dye my hair blonde, become good looking and go off to Lahinch to interview surfers, it just infuriates me. Another example (Fade St again) was sending of CVs to MCD and POD, no replies whatsoever, most people are invisible to them and that is just not on.

That's a fine excuse for them but it's not really accurate.
In times of near 'full employment', more often than not I didn't hear back from an application.

Didn't hear back after having been interviewed a few times too, which just boggles the mind and makes me add them to my kill list.

just copy the application/sent email etc? it's not that difficult to prove you're looking for work.

Are you actually writing anything by yourself?

Why not set up your own webpaper like the guys (all students I think) on www.DublinObserver.com have?

You really should consider that perhaps in your own unique circumstances there may be no jobs.

I understand your fury, but it is horses for courses.

OP; I work in a city centre shop specialising in jewellery and antiques. The vast majority of "job applications" I see are people in tracksuits or extremely casual clothing sticking their heads around the door asking "Have ya any jobs goin'?"

To me that isn't a serious job application, but to the SW it is.

My question is, when someone by their general appearance and demeanor gives you the impression that they're not really interested in getting a job, should I go to the trouble of typing up a PFO for them to wave at SW?

It would create an extra job of course replying to the many hundred who didnt receive the position.
Multiply this by however many jobs are going and you have a full time data entry job.

Keep a record of emails sent and jobs applied to. They are not going to require a PFO letter at SW.
