    Hey there,

I think someone nextdoor may be access my wireless network. I was on my laptop earlier today and noticed a little bubble pop up on the bottom right hand corner of the screen asking if I would like to connect to this individuals media library - it gave the name for their computer which I will not disclose here. To further investigate this I went to Control Panel >> 'View Network Status & Tasks' under 'Network & Internet' >> then 'view full map'. My fears it seemed were confirmed. Here is what I saw (note computer names have been blocked out):

Note the that the person I believe to be hacking my wireless has the red star beside it.

Now I am the only one in my household who uses a laptop. We have a desktop but it's connected directly to the modem via a cable. How do I stop this person from using my wireless?

Login to your router and change the wireless key (or turn on wireless encryption is it's not already enabled).

Are you sure it isnt the other PC that is on your network?

A windows update could have updated windows media player with home sharing?

Power it off and do another search. Plus you should be able ping said device if it is on your network.

After that what wireless settings are you using? WEP/WPA ?

I know it isn't the other PC because (a) I know the name of the other PC and it wasn't the same and (b) the PC wasn't switch on at the time that screen capture above was taken.

If your not already, switch your security encryption to WPA2 and give yourself a new and long password/encryption with numbers, letters, upper and lower case.
If they still get on your wireless then go next door and kick them in the leg!
