Very cheap international calls (Mobile and Landline). Even cheaper than ringing a Meteor customer in Ireland (Which is strange)

I'm not with them. My dad needs to move to a new provider though. He calls the UK a lot so thought this would suit him. Only after realising that on three UK calls come out of your flex units so that would be best for him. :)

How much is a lot? Another option would be what i do to keep in touch wit family in UK

I got an O2 UK Sim, pay 1.99 a month for Ireland Bolt on and now they class Ireland as part of UK for cell coverage, so doesn't cost to recive calls, 30p for first 3 mins, 5p a min after, 10p per text.

That would require him to switch sims so that would be way to complicated for him. Three's mega flex plan will give him more than enough minutes (including UK calls) and still save him a fortune.

Does doing this change my plan, or does it add cheap calls to my existing plan?

I had a poke round, and there seems to be an "International Calls" plan too, which I wouldn't be too keen on...

    i don't think so

You only have to sign up once and these great call rates will be automatically applied to your account. Don't worry, by opting into these international call rates you do not lose the network offer you are currently on.

Although i did read on the next page you can't get this offer if you have the international calls bundle, i'll be phoning customer care tomorrow rto check

 can't beat that! I'm paying 9c/min now on Meteor pre pay anytime international but local calls are ridiculously expensive.
    Moving to Tesco :p

do I need some special international tesco sim card? or every user of tesco mobile has 2c/min international calls?

Tesco charge 50c/min for UK calls though, as opposed to meteors 10.
Really just depends on what country you wanna call!

Most countries, except the UK, are cheaper on Tesco Mobile, from 2c per min. You could keep your current service and just use a Tesco SIM for international calls only. You can get one free here: http://www.tescomobile.ie/international/index.aspx

Was having a poke round the o2 website, and they do calls to China for 1c/min during night hours (on prepay). That's madness!

even local calls on Tesco Mobile are cheap only 20c per minute and you also get double free credit.

    Hi all,
Glad to have found this thread....

I was looking at finding the cheapest way of calling the UK too from an Irish mobile. After trawling through all the mobile phone providers, the cheapest I could find was with O2 http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/More%20info/O2+Clear+350+Sim+only?pagedesign=O2_PRES_moreInfoPopup
for which you pay just under 50 Euros a month. You can select one free add on which is unlimited landline calls within Ireland and UK!
The next best one I could find was with Three, which is 75 euros which has unlimited landline calls within UK and Ireland and lot's of minutes http://www.three.ie/business/priceplans/business-solo.htm

Still, I am wondering if Skype if still a better option.
I reckon there will be a connection charge of between 4 - 8 cents if I ring the UK landline number from my 3 phone. After that the call will be charged at 2 cents ( this is assuming I didn't buy into a plan, just credit..)
(let us say calling 20 minutes a day)
Is this really the cheapest? I am getting slightly confused with all the cheap calls offers as though the call would be cheap you have to dial another number that is not free, and depending on the operator they charge a different fee.

    All ideas welcome..
    Katleen

Dialwise.ie is also a decent one I use for those that want an alternative/not on meteor.

    10-15c per minute - that's not cheap!!!

With Blueface you only pay 1c per minute. And I'm with UPC now: FREE UNLIMITED INTERNATIONAL landline calls

    That's cheap ;)

Edit: realise the calls with Meteor are mobile calls and a lot cheaper than usual, but I wouldn't call it cheap - pun intended :D

    Hi all,

Since my last post, I have finally sorted out our mobile phone bills..
I settled on staying with three, opting for the flexi fix option 25, whereby I get 200 units, and I also added the add on of free landline calls within Ireland and the mini internet add on.

That costs me just under 30 Euros, and gives me free texts to any network within Ireland, and free 3to3 calls and of course the free landline calls.
    Nothing special I suppose there!
I then bought a Skype subscription for( in this case) UK.( or you could just have Skype credit) just over 50 Euros for the year.

Skype has introduced a new thing that if you create the international number in your Skype account, it texts a local Irish number to your mobile, so that if you have free landline calls added to your plan, it does not eat into your free minutes :)

Only thing I just discovered is that I can't text internationally and that I need to buy top up vouchers and international texts costing 25 cents , it's a pricy affair... I then found www.fishtext.com which offers very cheap text by pc and also mobile( you do need a smartphone I think), but it works a treat.

I am sure there are still other permutations possible, but this works best for me!

    All the best!
    Katleen

With all 3's billpay plans you can use 50% of your tarriff to call UK numbers. http://www.three.ie/terms/paymonthly_terms.htm

I was looking at this before for my mam who rings the UK a lot and its not unlimited calls there is a cap at 400 min a month.

"freetime World provides free off-peak local and national fixed landline calls and 400 off-peak international minutes per month to fixed landline numbers (excludes calls to mobile, premium rate, SMS and non geographic numbers) in selected international destinations. Anytime World provides free local and national fixed landline calls and 400 free international minutes at any time per month to fixed landline numbers (excludes calls to mobile, premium rate, SMS and non geographic numbers) in selected international destinations."

    So its not actually unlimited...

If you use the 10c per min International calls a lot just remember that the offer ends next week on June 1st.

Hopefully they'll extend it, but be aware that they may not and you could get hammered on call charges

I've been using Vodafone to call China (3 cent/minute) for the past five years. There are cheaper options but couldn't be bothered.

Best option for international calls is using an app like Viber for free Viber to Viber calls over WiFi/3G.

Next best option, is an app like RebTell when you pay a discounted rate for your international calls.

Next best option, is Google Talk/Google Voice via laptop/desktop.

Next best option, is 3's gocall.ie service or Meteor's international add on or Vodafone's international add on(s). All depends on where you are calling as to which one is cheapest.

Viber/Google Talk/RebTell have the cheapest calls then it is anyone's game depending on who you are calling.

For example, Tesco charge 20 cent per minute to UK mobiles. The same call is free with 3 with inclusive minutes or 10 cent per minute with Vodafone with a free add-on or 9.8 cent per minute with Google Talk.

Tesco have some cheap international landline calls to some countries. Most calls are to mobiles these days.
