Would it be best to travel over to Belgium or would the savings be mitigated by cost of travel for 2 people etc? Would goign to belfast make more sense?

Seek out a guy called "Goldfinger" just off Grafton Street. He will get you to pick a ring in Sheerans or wherever and he will copy it. He will do it for far less so you can get a bigger rock !!!!

His shop is upstairs on the same side of the road as the Bailey pub. It might not be that road off Grafton Street but he's easy enough to find.

Great value. I know loads of people who have fantastic rings made by him.

Here are my two comments on this subject:

    One

    Two

IMO, you get an awful lot more for your money in Antwerp.

i think he's on anne street, the next street up? its near la cave wine bar i think...

i visited him when i was getting engaged, but in the end i got my ring from www.weldons.ie, behind brown thomas. they have amazing stuff, lots of designs that i just didn't see anywhere else. and they had a great friendly vibe, it's a family run place that's been there for a billion years! they really were so friendly, i couldn't recommend them enough. my sister ended up getting her ring there too :)

i prefered to go local, in case i had any problems, it'd be a pain to travel back to antwerp! and they were the same price as blue nile for my ring.

pm me if you need any more info

We got my engagement ring and wedding band (bought separately) in Weirs, I was dubious about them but the service we got was amazing and didn't compare to other jewellers. Also, I found they had a great selection and didn't push the most expensive option. They were very open to negotiation on price and when I found a wedding band I loved a couple of months later they remembered us and we got a substantial discount.

I would avoid Appleby's. We had a terrible experiance there after Weirs.

thanks but that sounds a bit dodgey and if I was handing over 6k for a ring would wanna make sure he was going to be there is a few months time!

We got mine in Weldons too - found them fantastic to deal with and I adore the ring - its from 1910 and reset as it was originally.

Its very unusual and I've got loads of comments on it.
If you've got 6k to spend, you can look at things ticketed at 7-8k....

I am not trying to rain on anyones parade here but €6,000 on an engagement ring?
Would you not be better off spending maybe €1500 - €2000 on one and put the rest towards the wedding?

It's the OP's choice what they spend on an engagement ring. I'm sure they've arrived at that figure after giving consideration to what the wedding will cost. Please keep replies helpful and on topic ie: in response to the OP's original question.

We bought my ring in Fields on Grafton Street and were very happy with them. We only went in because it was the only one we hadn't been to and were heading home so we said we'd pop in on the way to the Luas. We'd already tried a load of other shops in the area but found a lot of them very pushy, basically showing us rings way over what we said our budget was, and also not really paying any attention to what styles I said I liked and didn't like. (We found Ernest Jones to be particularly bad in this regard. The girl we dealt with kept showing me massive chunky rings, which I hated and also looked ridiculous on my hand cos I've got tiny fingers, but she kept telling me these rings were really 'in' at the moment.)

The lady who we dealt with in Fields was the total opposite, she brought loads of rings down and was just so relaxed and helpful and quickly picked up on the type of rings that suited me. We were really delighted with the ring, got a good discount and I feel we got very good value for money.

You could have a look at some of the Dublin shops and see do they have branches in Belfast and then compare prices. There's a really good jewellers in Belfast called Steensons, they do really lovely pieces, but I'm not sure what their prices are like. I'm sure you'd get good value for money in Belgium, but my worry would be, as 07734 said, if something goes wrong then it's a long way back to Belgium.
