Nursing in Switzerland

Im currently a nurse working in dublin in the anesthetic/recovery departemnt. Myself and my partner are thinking about moving to switzerland next year as I am on temporary contract, nothing permanent, not managing to save any money with the poor wages etc. and it doesnt look like things are going to get any better.

Does anyone have any information on what it is like to work in switzerland? Are the wages any good? Is it necessary to speak french/german in the hospitals? Thinking of moving to or near Geneva.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!! :D

I have many friends living there and while there are many foreigners living there, I couldn't imagine working in a hospital and not knowing the language. I know in Ireland those who cannot speak the language in hospitals generally end up cleaning.

I've been living over here for over 20 years now, I can say without a doubt that you will need a very high level of French/German if you wish to work in a Swiss hospital. Swiss salaries are very good and as a result hospitals attract lots of French and German staff, so a language weakness will definitely be an issue.

On the other hand, if you are willing to widen your search to include all types of medical related companies, then I'd expect that you will find some English speaking opportunities among the multinational companies.

If your are seriously considering Switzerland then invest in a copy of Living and Working In Switzerland, it covers all you need to know and more.

    good luck with that,

    Jim.

Thank you so much for your help. Im going to have to do a crash course in french and make the most of my boyfriend since he is french. We plan on moving in the next few months and I really want to work in anasthesia/recovery since it is my forte.

What do you work at over there? Are you glad you made the move??

Well by profession I'm a Chartered Accountant, but I mainly provide consulting services in the IT side for various financial institutions.

Switzerland has been my home for so long that it is not something I really thing about! I particularly like the Swiss attitude to Life-Work balance, over time is not encouraged and no one ever contacts me outside work hours, which is great.
