Folding Attic Stairs Hinge - Where?

    Hello,

I have a folding Attic Stairs similar to a Stira, however one of the hinges has broken, which initially meant I could not close it, but I have since removed it, and the stairs now does close, although hangs down a little on the side where the hinge was removed.

Are these standard hinges? If yes, where would I source one? If no, can you recommend any companies who would service this, and fix in the North County Dublin area.

I believe the one currently fitted which is 7+ years old was sourced up North, just can't recall the name of the company.

    Any information appreciated. Thanks !

Thread moved from construction & planning.

    As requested some pictures:

    139369.jpg

In the picture directly above the bracket which connects the arm/hinge for the stairs and the spring, basically came away from the metal plate which is screwed into the joist.

Or if my thinking is correct and the retaining bracket joiner to the hinge mechanism is snapped, maybe you could just drill a 150 mm x 6mm bolt through the components and side frame to rejoin. Or is the faulty side mechanism completely shagged ???

Basically how the arm/hinge was connected to the plate/joist has broken. The metal got weak, and the bolt in the center just pulled out of the square plate.

Its for this reason i am saving for a stira...parts for most of the generic ones are hard to get...if not impossible where as stira

    10 Year parts guarantee...
    1 year parts and labour...

Granted its more expensive but its better quality...

Based on your explanation, do you not think that a bolt as suggested might be feasible ? Seems likely to me. Granted, aesthetically, not a match for the far side but with a seldom seen attic stair hinge, who gives a sh!t;)

Maybe something could be done, but when the join broke/failed the hinge/arm got bent from a combination of the pressure from the spring, and trying to get the door open/closed, so that probably really needs to be replaced.

I had also emailed a company up north who I thought might have provided the stairs with some pictures. They said €70 for a hinge posted, or €140 for a service call and hinge install.

    Thought's on the price ?

Thoughts? A feckin joke. simple as that. Seriously, post some detailed pics of the affected part. I'm sure it's possible to repair . You could get a complete replacement stair new for 100 in a local store. Up to you though ;)

It depends on how badly you want it fixed as opposed to buy a new one. €140 aint bad really if you consider that they are travelling from the north to repair it and back....

Sure, replace it could cost you about €100, but thats only for the stairs, not including labour to remove and replace the unit, and the redecorating costs. Not necessarily cheaper when you factor all of this in.
