Brake light switch, cheap part from main dealer you would fit it yourself in 10 minutes.

Your ESP (Electronic Stability Program) liight should be on ( I think) if its engaged, which you want. Id Check the manual.
YOu may well have a blown bulb in your tailight. Just replace. Cheap bulb and a screwdriver and you're sorted!

ESP light is yellow i.e a warning to warn you it is off,if ESP is active the light should be out.

ESP light on and/or Glowplug light on or flashing on is a sure sign of brake light switch failure, especially if the brake lights aren't working.Highly unlikely for both brake light bulbs and high level brake light bulbs to all fail at once.

    Give bad advice much?

Open your boot and just inside the seal, you'll see a round cover about an inch and a half on either side of the boot.

Flip this open and an 8mm socket with an extension will open the little bolt that holds the lens in place.
Open the bolt and your lens should just pop out in your hands.
Be careful to line up the two "grease nipple" shaped ...things with the holes, before you bolt it back in place!:)

A grease nipple was the only think I could think of that these bits resemble!:D

I'd agree that it's the brake light switch. I've replaced 3 on my Allroad in 7 years. They are a know weak point.

On the AR, they ESP, ABS and suspension lights come on and stay on. ESP and ABS still work, but it just seems to be an odd fault the brake light switch throws up. I haven't let mine get to the stage where the brake lights stop working.

For some reason, brake light switches and indicator relays are weak points on Audis.

Waste of time changing the bulbs trust me,go to your local Audi garage and buy the brake light switch yourself and then get a mechanic to fit it,the brake light switch is up behind the top of the brake pedal you would change it in the same time it took to change 2 brake light bulbs the only difference being that changing the brake light switch would fix your actual problem :D

Assuming its a B6 model and not an older B5 registered in 2002

Brake switch should be part number 8E0945515 or 3B0945511 depending on your VIN. 8E0945515 is to vin number 8E-2-202 378 but they'll probably give you the newer one anyway.

-remove side cover to fuse panel
-remove two screws for the lower dash cover (each corner of the cover)
-remove a screw behind the fuse cover (now exposed)
-twist the old break switch out
    -disconnect the switch
    -twist new break switch in
    -reconnect the switch
    -put the thing together

Check your fuses if its not the fuse its your brake light switch, common fault with vag easy fix 10 minute job

The ESP light staying on means the ESP is deactivated. To activate press the ESP switch once. It's located above the stereo beside the hazard warning lights switch.Consult the manual
