Sky + box receive FTA uk channels and irish ones after cancelling sub

hi
I am cancelling my sky sub in the new year .
I am only interested in the bbc`s ,itv ,channel4 etc and rte 1 &2, tv3,tg4 and not the millions of crap channels on sky.
i originally was into sky sports but no longer need it.
can sky hd box recieve free to air uk channels such as bbc`s channel4
etc as well as rte, tv3,tg4 after cancelling my subscription?
I am not a techie but will i have to get a new box. Will the sky dish be ok?

you wont get ant irish channels without a sub but there are all the bbcs and itv and c4 etc,there is a sticky somewhere with a full list of the channels i will see if i can dig it up.

You could get a duo box sat and dtt!

Like the edison 2 in 1...

You would be able to receive rte 1 and rte 2hd, tv3,tg4, 3e and rte nl threw the dtt (saorview) and all the bbcs, channel 4, itvs and five, etc for free on the sat!

Just use the Sky box for sat and decent HDTV on the Aerial for Irish DTT.

to find out what you will get,
unplug sky box
remove card
plug in and wait for channels to load. (without putting in the card)

Does anyone know what happens with Sky in your apartment in these situations? If you cancel after the year, can you continue to use the access to the dish, or do Sky switch this off?

It's not sky's it belongs to Apartment Management. If you pay Sky direct there is no effect. If you pay via some other agency then there may be an annual maintenance charge.

Whats the best equipment to buy to recieve decent HDTV on the Aerial for Irish DTT ?

I believe the signal is lousy near naas.

im having a problem at the moment trying to get my spare sky box working for freeview, Ive a sky+ HD box already connected to my dish using 2 of the connections, i connected another coax cable to the dish and try boot up my old box but i get nothing on screen?? there is power going to the old sky box and i've tried reset it by holding backup and unplugging the power in the back, leaving for about 20 seconds and plugging back in(all while holding down the backup button to reset my box, the box powers back up and the 4 lights light up but won't go off, am i not hold the backup button down long enough?

Any ideas what i could be doing wrong??

When you say power, Is the light on the box Green or does it stay Red.
If it stays Red forget it the box is knackered. Probably to get it repaired would cost the same price as buying a cheap Free to Air box.


Freeview = Aerial
Freesat = Satellite
Free To Air = Satellite

Hi Scaller thanks for the reply, power goes to the box and it switches on as the light goes green, it even goes into reset mode (4 lights light up on front panel) but i get nothing on my TV.

I have Coax run from dish to skybox, have power cable into box, and have scart plug with RCA (yellow, red, white) plugged into the scart plug then going back to the TV, but i get no picture not even menu or no sat signal???

SCARTin or SCART out to RCA? They are not the same. some have a changeover switch.

Sounds like your cable is wrong.

I'll change the scart connector when I get home and seeif that makes a difference, at the moment I'm using a scart plug from my xbox360, I'll try a normal one and let u guys know how I get on :-)

Just to update, cheers watty it was the damn scart plug i was using, i changed it to an (in/out plug) and it worked perfect, thanks for the tip appreciated.
