Working in recruitment

I know a lot of jobseekers hate recruitment agencies, but there have got to be some positive aspects since they seem to be thriving despite the current economic climate blah blah blah.

Been offered a job in a recruitment company, just want to ask if there are any boardsies who have worked in the sector before, and if you can share your experiences with me?

    Cheers.

My sister worked in one 2 years ago and found it very tough. I used to have to deal with them from a technical perspective in my last job and they were always difficult to deal with, constantly cutting corners, abrupt in manner and always choosing the cheap and risky option.

It is a very cutthroat business and I cant see how they are thriving at the moment. I would avoid working for them unless you are unemployed.

I'm not at all sure why the OP is under the impression this sector is Booming? its dead in the water and has been for over a year. Thankfully some unscrupulous operators have closed. Its a cut throat business and primarily commission driven (sales). I guess a job is a job in the current climate and possibly a stepping stone to another more fulfilling career path. Good luck with your decision but don't be under any illusions, its a horrid industry to be in, all the more with impossible targets in the current climate!

OP I've a friend in the business and he loves it. Now the days are long, and the work is hard, bur from what I understand the compensation is good (you get commission too).

To work in the Industry I think you'll want to be fairly confident and outgoing i.e. be able to approach people who are hiring and get them to accept the raft of CVs you're sending in, but if your personality suits the work then you'll enjoy it.

From what I can see the industry is getting along nicely. There are people hiring. Look, in the past six months I've had loads of interviews and I've applied for plenty of other roles that are up. The majority of interviews I got came through recruitment agencies. These lads are busy and they're doing a good trade.

Also, and you can call me sexist if you'd like, but the amount of attractive women working in these agencies seems to be abnormally high!

The above has to be the greatest load of Horse ****e i have seen posted on any thread in Boards.ie

WTF planet are you on? Perhaps you work in the PR department of the NRF. You have had loads of Interviews and applied for loads of Jobs?????????? perhaps your referring to the majority of candidates that go through this process when dealing with recruitment agencies which results in ZERO apart from wasted time and effort.

Perhaps the OP should refer to the Recruitment Agencies "Name and Shame Thread", here they will get a real sense of what people think of this Industry.

I'm not going to waste energy in commenting on your last bizarre statement about abnormal amount of attractive women working in this sector. Christ all mighty WTF was that about?

You don't like people who disagree with you do you?

You're basically calling me a liar because I said I've gotten interviews from dealing with recruiters. More the fool you, I have. And while some agencies are difficult to deal with and to be avoided the majority I find are pretty decent.

Your little rant and my reply here are pretty irrelevant anyway. The OP wants to know if anyone can enjoy working as a recruiter. You basically came back and said only idiots and antichrists work as recruiters. I'm saying I know people in the industry who enjoy their jobs. It's a difference of opinion, cop on to yourself and let it go.

    Thanks Scráib.

I know recruiters have a bad name, but so do many professions, especially stuff in sales, which is technically what recruiting is. I'm currently unemployed, so some work is better than no work.

I might come back and share my own experience in a few weeks/months.

If anyone has anything to add to the thread, please do but I am well aware that recruiters aren't the most popular people in the working world, thanks.

Certainly is a difference of opinion and the OP thanking you for your sexist comment says it all. The only recruiters i saw in the past year were completely under qualified, very disinterested and generally worked from squalid rent office space. Incidental i did not call you a liar, however i would say that your quite naive. Nice to see two more agencies had receivers appointed this week, so much for a growing industry!

I wasn't "thanking" him for his sexist comment, I was thanking the fact that they addressed the question and didn't go off on a "recruiters are sh1t" rant, as you seem to have done.

I know recruiters have a bad name, but that's not what I asked. I asked for experiences in working in recruitment, but not with recruiters, as I know people have had bad experiences with them.

You obviously don't like recruiters, I get it. But you're not answering my questions so perhaps take your hatred of recruiters to the Name and Shame thread.

I have certainly contributed to the above thread, I would not say i hate them, in fact i am bemused by them both as a previous candidate and client. Anyway clearly my opinion is not what you want to hear so good luck with this career choice. Just hope you don't give up a good job to go into recruitment and be sure to throughly check out the company before committing!

    I'm outta this thread!
