Need help with an uncooperative iPod- where's my music gone?!

    Hi all,

Firstly, apologies to the mods if this is in the wrong place and/or if this is a repetition of a frequest post. I looked through the first few pages, and couldn't see anything similar!

Ok now for the problem: I think the music database on my 160GB iPod has somehow become corrupted. Whenever I plug the iPod into the laptop, iTunes now tells me that there is no music on it- all of the data is 'Other'.

The music/video files themselves are all still in the 'iPod control' folder. My query is- how do I get them back as music?

I was thinking about backing up the whole folder to an external hard drive I have - 1000GB no problem with space. However, as I have at least 100GB worth of music and movies on the iPod, is this likely to take forever?! The plan was to create a music folder on the external HDD and set this as my iTunes library. Is this my only option?

Unfortanely the music on there is mostly a collection of other peoples stuff so I don't have it all saved anywhere else. There is also music I have had on other laptops that are no more. I'm heading travelling in a months time and I need my iPod working by them!

So any help gratefully received. And sorry for waffling :)
