white under filler caps

    Hi,

I have not used both my cars in over a week with the weather, however I checked the oil in both my cars today and noticed alot of white under the filler caps on both cars.. Is it because of the desperately low temperatures we are having lately that has caused this? Never noticed this before in any other cars I have ever owned. Surely it's moisture that intruded into the engine somehow due to lack of use..

Anyone else want to go out and pop their oil caps off?

    Cars are a 2004' 2.0L Audi A6 & 2000' 1.8L Alfa 156. Both cars have under 60k on the clocks.

    Thanks

Funny You mentioned this, I noticed the exact same thing on my 2000 Golf when I removed the oil cap for a regular weekly check. The car is used everyday and the engine was warm when I saw the residue on the cap. I was a little puzzled but took no notice, but maybe I should have, nothing seems to have affected it anyway.

Its just condensation from the engine not getting hot enough - common on short journeys.

Not much to worry about usually, although sometimes can be an indicator of head gasket failure.

Yeah I have to agree thats what happened to me. the engine was barely at operating temp according to the guage which meant it probably still had a way to go before reaching op temperature.

My car has 140,000 Miles, maybe that might be the cause, I sure hope it's not:( I've only seen it once in the cold weather though and I have not seen it since, so fingers crossed!!
