at work we're looking at setting up a golf society.

can people advise as to the benefits of being a society rather than just being a social outing for people, would you get cheaper green fees and so on?

    thanks for ye're help!

Looking to do something similar as well... you will get cheaper green fees but the main benefit is the social aspect.... Just remember to keep it friendly, don't have high value prizes as you will get arguments about handicaps amongst the social golfers.

ya we wouldnt have hectic prizes at all, i dont know would we have any prizes to be honest. the cheaper green fees would be the main attraction as its mostly social golfers playing maybe 5 outings a year

It would be no harm to draw up a list of membership rules - a bit like a constitution. It would be better for two or three of you to get together to draw them up. Having guidelines means that everyone should be treated fairly. It may seem unnecessary at this stage but societies that are well run stay the course (no pun intended!). I'm a member of one for 12 years (apart from golf club) and it has grown to about 75 members. We only have about 6 outings a year but we do have a captain and president with corresponding prizes and we also have prizes for every outing. Funding comes from such a large membership and everyone doesn't play at every outing.

We're doing the same at work next year, first outing around Easter. Anyone have any tips/advice about getting polo shirts with society name on them? Would only be about 8 or 12 to start with.

    Join http://mygolfsociety.ie/

They give discounts on courses and you can set up your society homepage. My society use it and I think it's good.
