Echo on some outbound SIP VoIP calls using SPA3102

    Hi all,

On some outbound calls (not all) over a SIP trunk (VoIP with Rynga - a Betamax company), I get a bad echo which is very offputting or annoying. Can anyone please suggest any setting on the SPA3102 which I should check and potentially change ? In Admin Login when in Advanced Settings, there are so so many parameters, I just don't know where to start.

FXS Port Input and Output gain are BOTH set to -3, FXS Port Impedence is 370+620||310nF. I have More Echo Suppression set to Yes. The Preferred Codec is set to G711u although Use Pref Codec Only is set to No.

Can you try forcing it to use the G729 codec?

Also I don't know if the following impedance settings are available to you but they might help : CTR21 (270 Ohm + 750 Ohm||150nF)

I initially tried G729 and set the "Use Pref Codec Only" to Yes. Outbound calls were OK but for inbound, the phone would not ring.

I then went back to G729 and Use Pref Codec Only at No but the quality hasn't been the best either. I've now gone and set it to G711a (not U as before) although have Use Pref Codec Only still set to No. While it uses the most Bandwidth, I have plenty so it makes the most sense to go for the best quality possible.

I'll know in a day or two if this has fixed the Echo but certainly didn't with using G729 that's for sure.

So for outbound calls, did G729 solve the echo problem? Also did you try the impedance setting changes that I mentioned above? Are your inbound calls also delivered by Rynga?

Higher bandwidth usage does not necessarily mean higher voice quality (for you or for the person at the other end of tha call). G711 codecs are fine on a LAN or on a perfect broadband line but they aren't ideal for the Internet leg of a VOIP call

Since G729 didn't do the trick, what about G723 or G726. The router has both of these as an option.
