Satellite not possible (line of sight issue), what are the options?

Recently I was informed that because of trees behind our house, sky/freesat is not possible due to tree obstruction! What, if any, are my options if I really want satellite? It looks like all houses on the street are affected as there is not a sat dish in sight as pointed out by the installer. Any ideas?

    Ta.

Unfortunately, you have only 2 solutions:

Ask around if there is a communal dish on the roof etc. If not:, You MUST get LOS.

The average elevation angle for Astra2 in Ireland is between 19-22 degrees (Dublin is 21). 21 degrees = 0.384 , so if the building/trees are, say, 30 meters away, the dish MUST be 30 x 0.384 = maximum 11.5m BELOW the obstruction height.

Stick to an old rule of 1:3 for a Satellite elevation angle in Ireland for an estimation and you will be fine

It may be possible to get signal without cutting down the trees!

Download a software called Gorbtrack which will allow you to calculate dish position in relation to the trees to get signal. You can tell how high the dish should go and how far back from the tree to get an unblocked signal.

Measure the tree's height using these basic techniques and input the data into gorbtrack.

You can also try http://www.dishpointer.com/ which has an obstacle line of site checker over-layed on Google Maps, If you can find your house and the trees, you can manually move the red balloon ( after clicking the show obstacle box) and it will calculate the maximum height obstacle you can get away with.
I assume you should be selecting 28.5 Eurobird or 28.2 Astra Satellites to show the LOS, very handy.

They even have an augmented reality App for iphone or ipod touch which allows you to point the camera along the line of site and see the real view overlayed with max obstacle heights, have not tried this but looks really neat.
