Capping pipe to gas fire... question

I want to replace the open coal effect gas fire with a normal open soild fuel fire.

    My question is this....

I know I need a RGII person to do the work and that they will cap off the gas but do I light the fire with the capped gas pipe underneath the grate?

Or does the pipe have to be capped off at floor level or do they dig out the hearth and bury it?

Anyone have this done or any RGII guys or gals on here can help?

    Thanks Harry21

From memory s/he does not cap it under the fire but at the switch which is usually on the side.

AFAIK, Depends on where the pipe comes from.

If from directly underneath the fire, its buried in 2-3" of fire cement.
If from the back or side, its cut/bend back to behind the solid fuel fire-back mould.

    Thanks lads.

I was afraid it would just be capped and left there. I want to make sure I know what the person should be doing when they come.

Have a price of €150 from one fella and €90 from another. All they know is that they are removing a gas fire so I can install an open fire.
