Living in the North, working in Cavan?

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a place in Enniskillen where I'm from, but my job will be in Cavan (hopefully). Are there any issues I should think about with people living in the north working in Cavan (or anywhere in the south would be the same I suppose). I'm thinking of things like tax, mortgages etc?

I'm aware that probably sounded like a really stupid question but I just want to think everything through before I commit to anything!

I think it'd be a good idea to check with Revenue what the situation is.

I've no experience in this field but one thing that jumps out at me is if you were to lose your job in the South while still living in the North can you claim Job seekers benefit (as opposed to job seekers allowance). JS benefit is calculated on how much you pay to the Irish exchequer while you are working here and it'd be a pity if you couldn't claim any of what you'd normally be entitled to back.

I'd also say to contact revenue, they'll tell you straight off, or put you through to someone who can.

Bottom line is : taxes where you work, benefits where you live. As for medical care I believe an E111 and cross border payments from HSE to NHS and vice versa is the way it works.

As far as I know you can't be made to pay taxes twice on the same income inside the EU , what is possible though as far as I know is the the Revenue in Fermanagh might be looking for the balance ( if there is any ) of what you would have paid when working in their jurisdiction and what you've paid to the Irish Revenue.

Probably your best option is to walk into Jobs and Benefits and the tax office in Enniskillen ( they're nicely nextdoors to eachother anyway ) and throw a few "what if's" on the table.

Hi, what do you mean about the E111? Would I be entitled to nhs health are if I was living in the North?
