Do ye think 3D television will take off?

Personally I don't. I don't think anybody really wants to put on dodgy shades to get a headache watching Eastenders in 3D.

I don't think there's the interest. Certainly not for TV broadcasts. I mean we all appreciate the benefits of HD televisions: Larger, thinner, lighter screens with great picture quality if given a good source. But 3D? Once the novelty of demo movies like Monsters V Aliens and Avater wears off will it ever be used again? I believe that from next year on you will probably find it harder and harder to find a TV without 3D functionality but I can see those glasses gathering dust behind the TV.

Think I'll wait for holograms :)

until they lose the need for the glasses it'll never be anything more than a novelty.

Well, the manufacturers are pushing it very strongly, and the prices will continue to fall.

3D without glasses will be out in the next few years, which will also help.

I'm not sure if it will take off say like widescreen.

Playing games in 3D is a much more immersive experience than TV will ever be, and really is fantastic to play, so thats where I think the real benefits will be seen.

It's in it's early phase. Everybody thought DVDs were a novelty because of price and poor selection of movies to start it off but then it killed VHS rather swiftly when it did eventually pick up. HDTV was in America years before it got over here, it's only now that it's picking up pace.

When the glasses are gone and it's more fine-tuned in games and TV then I imagine it will be quite popular. It's a natural progression for TV technology but it'll take a few years.

Plus the GF's brother bought himself a 3D 50'' HDTV so I HAVE to check it out!

Heheh, it's one step closer to hologram TV :pac:

They have tried this 3d numerous times now since the 1950's and again in the 80's but it never took off. I think it's probably due to the wearing of glasses. There is definitely a future in it without the glasses.

I tested it out one day in Harvey Normans and I hated it, felt a headache coming on after a few minutes.

First step will be in gaming. Can't imagine it'll ever be important for some TV programs though.

It wont take off in the home. It is far too expensive. To watch the Sky 3D channel you need to subscribe to all Sports, Movies and HD. That is an absolute rip off. Then you will need to buy extra glasses depending on your family size and not forgetting a new 3DTV

I think it will be in the cinema for a while though.

Nah! I don't think so myself I can imagine getting a headache from it. I think with gaming as the others said it would be more suited but I can't see myself sitting down to watch a programme in 3D there's just no need.

Yes it will... for gaming, big budget movies and sports it's brilliant... I doubt ANYONE is looking to watch bloody Eastenders in 3D.. that is not the market that 3D is looking for!

As long as you have to wear glasses it's just a fad and I don't see them realistically being able to provide 3d without glasses using current technology.

But 3D telles do have something in their favour that means they are being bought for other purposes. The hardware you need to pull off the 3D effect needs to be of a high standard so even the low end 3D TVs are at the higher end of what's possible with the technology so the recommendation I've heard is to buy one if your looking for a good flat screen.

No, 3D television won't take off fully - I can see it being used primarily for games and sports matches but not for television shows. I just can't see the TV industry going for it; they likely won't have the money it would take to film 3D properly like the movie industry would. I can't see it making any impact - would the Sopranos, Band of Brothers/the Pacific or any of those shows be any better in 3D? I doubt it - also it will leave people to focus more on the graphics/look of the show, rather than the storytelling, which is one thing that TVs have over movies.

So, yes for games and sports, no for TV shows.

for games functionality yes, for everyday tv shows no, can you imagine Ryan Turbridy looming out of the screen at you on a Friday night? doesnt bear worth thinking about.

toshiba have already made tvs that dont need glasses, suppose to go on sale in japan, but require you stand almost right in front of the tv, and you have to stand 2 or 3 foot from the screen to get the 3d effect,

if they want immersion beyond a film like Avatar then holgrams are the way forward, but i suppose this is an essential step to that ultimate goal, avatar showed its possible to do 3D at a remarkably high level, how many times have they attempted to introduce 3D,

i watched clash if the titans, which got a conversion, it was tripe the 3D actually took away from it, having blurred edges and the glasses making the picture darker, then i saw resident evil which was filmed with the same cameras as avatar, also tripe, just goes to show its that just casue the technology is there that it will automatically make films better,

if the technology is put in the right directors hands, with the right story, and they embrace it like james cameron did, then it could become a normal cinematic expierience, but for every james cameron theres gonna be 20 odd directors being forced to use a technology that isnt required in there films, or that they themselfs arent confident enough to use, resulting in us the public having to pay and inflated price for a substandard film,

so far its a fad, like many things before it, but a lot of fads became normal, for every mini disc, theres an MP3,

It's a load of bollix. Things are supposed to gain simplicity through innovation. I already sometimes have trouble finding the remote for my tv.. having to locate misplaced glasses and take care not to destroy them is not fecking simplification.

3D is over rated. Every second film now is 3D, and mostly it's not even necessary, making films 3D just to just to bump box office takings. 3D TVs is just more of the same, a fad.

Definitely has a future in computer games and work is ongoing on this. It won't be long now before we see releases, next few years anyway.

Possibly it'd work for sports on Television. Formula One would be awesome though I'd probably end up getting sick :p

Can't see it for normal TV, no
