Star Trek III Question.

In ST: III , a smuggler/mercenary vessel is seen transmitting the Genesis data to Kruge; who then proceeds to destroy said vessel.

How, though, did the Genesis information leak into the wrong hands in the first place, or am I missing something?

    Enlighten me. :o

I could be wrong, but I don't think there's any cannon reason given. It's likely assumed that the mercenary ship was an 'information dealer' of some sorts, who obtained the info through a source in Starfleet.

Perhaps it was someone with idealogical beiefs, who leaked it in order for it to be made aware to the Klingons thus getting it out in the open. Or perhaps it was someone who wanted to a war, knowing the Klingons would react aggressively to Starfleet possessing such 'destructive power'.

Your guess is as good as mine, but I'm not sure there was a reason ever given.
