Winter walking/climbing in the Reeks

Spent last Saturday in the company of Nathan Kingerlee from this site and two climbers, Martina and Niamh, on his winter walking course. What a blast! Arrived at Nathan’s house in the shadow of the Reeks late, hungover, and missing a few items which I forgot to pack in my haste. Set off about 10 am, and made for a gully a little off the beaten tracks which was full of ice and snow. Nathan supplied harnesses, helmets and ice axes, and so we roped up and started the climb. A really great experience. Have been up the Reeks plenty of times, but this was something very different. The climb was thoroughly enjoyable. Enough work without sapping the spirit, enough exposure without being dangerous, plenty of snow and ice and of course winter wonderland surroundings. And good company. Progress was good, lots of work with ice axes which was a novelty for me. Slipped once or twice, but obviously safety was a priority and the rope held. Reached the ridge where we paused for food and drinks before making our way down a different route.

For anyone with little or no experience who fancies an adventure, I would say go for this. But even for anyone like me who has seen the Reeks many times, trust me, this is like seeing them in a whole new light. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
