Pre budget petrol price hike

What's behind the hike in petrols prices does anyone know? I was flabbergasted to see the average unleaded price in Newbridge is suddenly 137.9c/l:eek:
And most other garages I have spotted since seem to be not far off.

It's worrying for motorists considering this is happening before the budget which will presumably put a further hefty hike on the price.

Yep that Texaco usually has high prices, but the ones in Newbridge are usually the cheapest around that I know of.

Yeah I noticed it around Limerick too. Jumped from 129.9 to 133.9/134.9 last week.
Due to jump 8+ cents tomorrow too I think.... fill up while you can.

Noticed a price hike in my garage of choice, Top on Ushers Quay. Price around a week ago was 129.9 now up to 134.9, the more expensive garages further out on my route to work have made a similar jump. Maxol on the Cabra road gone from 133/134.9 to 137.9 this morning.

I was thinking it might have been either a) jump up the prices to make a quick couple of quid during the cold snap or b) a jump in cost of fuel due to reduced deliveries from the cold snap.

Didn't even think of the budget. But it would make sense. Will be topping up on the way home.

    FFS

This is getting ridiculous IMO. Its not that far ago that prices were 50 c/litre

I'm hoping the garages in Newbridge have got wind of the budget rise and put it on early, and its not that there's going to be a further 8 cents on top of it. Otherwise a fill up is going to cost me near €100:(

The other great hope, as you say, is that it's a temporary blip due to the cold spell and it will eventually correct itself.

We had a thread in here last week warning of a 3-4c rise in fuel costs per ;litre due to the fall in the value of Euro V Dollar. That's come home to roost and the cold weather is probably having an effect on prices too.
Tie that in with a budget tomorrow and people maybe buying more than they would normally and a healthy dose of profiteering from those garages that are in the right location and this is what youy're left with...
I filled up yesterday (130.9c)...most of the other places around here were around the 134 mark.
If STG falls it looks like the petrol run to the North might be coming back in to fashion...

To be fair, it would cost €20 to newry and back to dublin. There would want to be some difference!

I am half thinking pf buying a massive tanker, driving it to Saudi, filling up at their €0.02/litre rates, and driving the tanker back.
If these price rates keep going up the way they are it might become viable soon :p

I'm more so talking about people in border areas (like myself).
In recent years fuel retailers south of the border have benefitted from the business from the North...a reversal in flow would be damaging in a lot of ways (I recall well the dearth of petrol stations that closed here in the 80's when fuel was significantly cheaper up North).

I got some shock when I came into Newbridge on saturday I can tell you.

The way things are going I can see it hitting the €2 a litre mark in the next few years. It makes me weep thinking about it

Then I suppose only 12 months ago we would have said the same about €1.50/litre mark and thats probably not far off what it will be post budget.

Its time for a 1.0 Lupo Diesel methinks!

So its looking like an unfortunate coincidence of a bit of everything. Looks like we'll have to get used to €1.50/l starting very soon :(

    Old UK article but good:
The price of petrol is closely, but not completely, linked to the price of oil. As oil is priced in dollars, movements in the dollar exchange rate affect the price of oil in other currencies.

Petrol refining companies and investment banks can push the price of petrol higher through speculation. This is where they invest in the commodity and try to influence the price by limiting the supply. Refineries will reduce production because they want to keep prices higher.
