I'm currently trying to set up a limited company and the accountant we intend to use is a sibling of one of the directors.

I was recently informed that this is illegal by some friends, but I can't find any legislation on the internet regarding the issue. Is it illegal to have a family member do your accounts?

It may be the case that this is not written down in legislation or indeed stone. There are cases where linkages to company directors can and do result in 'issues' with respect to the overall governance and management of firms. While there may be no real conflict in relation to the work undertaken, any influence or perceived influence in respect of work that might be undertaken relating to the company or corporation sole, should be undertaken by a fully independent party.
