    hi,

I am just wondering what is the situation in Ireland at the moment for someone who wants to make a living playing poker.

Would they have to pay tax on money won? Would it also have any effect on their social welfare payments, or medical card or any other form of benefits they may be recieving from the state, assuming they are unemployed of course!

Not all of your questions, I see you also asked about Social Welfare implications:
    Taken from http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/JobseekerSupports/JobseekersAllowance/Pages/ja.aspx#Rules2

    Rules

To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must:
The two I've made bold, are the two you could potentially have a problem with.

If you are occupying your time in an activity with the expectation of a financial reward, then notwithstanding that it may not be a trade within the meaning of the tax acts, a social welfare deciding officer could take a different view in deciding whether or not you are available for and genuinely seeking work.

Should you become successful and amass a substantial amount of money, this could affect your eligibility under the means test.
