Scrappage scheme, is it worth going for and any suggestions?

I have a 96 VW Polo, I've had it for nearly 7 years and never really had any trouble with it. Lately however I've have to get a few bits and pieces done, wheel bearings, shocks, exhaust, bushings, and stuff like that and I think it'll need a new starter motor soon.

Is it worth going for a new one and scrapping my old once-trusty Polo? Anyone have any suggestions for something that won't cost an arm and a leg that's reliable?

I'd basically just like something fairly small, 1.4 litre engine at the most, and that I can get a proper roof rack for. Any help is appreciated.

If you have €15000 ish spare it's not a bad move, hardly actually worth it, good way of dropping €10000 over 4 years (you'd do well at that actually), a friend spent €7000 going from an 08 corolla to a 2010 model, another friend was quoted €10000 to go from an 08 Focus van to a new one. Of course if you buy a new car for €15000 and still have it in 7 years than it's quite good value.

Given that your car has been reliable bar the normal wear and tear items you list it would be a lot cheaper holding onto it than changing it for a €15K car which would be a Polo/Clio/Mazda 2 etc. A lot to pay for much the same class of car.

Having said that there are good deals to be had and I understand the temptation. IMO the best value out there at the moment is the Clio.

Thanks for the replies, gave a look around a few places today. With scrappage a Clio for €11,500, a Yaris for €12,000 or a Polo for €12,500. The amount they'd depreciate by would probably be triple the maintenance cost of my trusty old Polo. Looks like I'll be keeping her for another while.

I'd sooner have the €11,000 or €12,000 in the pocket feeling ;)

I'll have you know good sir that my soon-to-be 15 year old car is pretty nice and shiny for it's age and has surprised a lot of people over the years :)

Aint all about just buying the car. You need to insure it as well fully comp otherwise it isnt worth it (as Ive found out crashed my 2010 car yest). And take out bonus protection too if you can (thank God took it out). Its all these things youve to think of too.

Dunno about that, went for a test drive a few new cars nothing beat the build quality of my good old 99 bmw coupe and the sound and power 2.8 V6 just blow those mickey mouse cars away. Decided to stick with my beemer:)

If I had gone to the trouble of swapping out whatever engine was in my BMW for a V6, I certainly wouldn't decide to go and scrap it either. There aren't too many BMW owners who decided to retrofit an engine type that is blasphemous to BMW, you know;)!
