Winless Fowler ranked 25thin the world wins rookie of the year over McIlroy.......
The PGA TOUR also announced the Rookie of the Year winner, Rickie Fowler. The 21 year old Fowler becomes the youngest player to win since Tiger Woods won at the age of 20 in 1996.
Fowler had seven top 10 finishes which include finishing second at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley. He finished 32nd in the FedEx Cup standings but the most telling stat may be his World Golf Ranking. Starting the season ranked 249th in the world, today Fowler is ranked 25th.
Earning $2,857,108 in 28 starts, Rickie Fowler edged out other Rookie of the Year nominees Rory McIlroy, Derek Lamely, and Alex Prugh.

Def would have given it to Fowler.....did everything but win, showed great consistancy unlike McIlroy and also showed great maturity at the ryder cup and effectivly carried his more experienced partners

Without a doubt Mcilroy pulling out of the tour for next season had an influence. to me he is streets ahead of Fowler. I do think Fowler is a great player, but McIlroy is exceptional

I would have given it to Rory, but tbh Rickie probably deserves it moar because he actually was a Rookie. I know Rory was too but he was ranked in or around the top 10 in the world when he joined the PGA Tour.
The players who were voting probably didnt consider him one. Otherwise it would have been his.

Pretty much the only way a yank can beat a european to a title these days... By giving it to him!

To be fair, rory doesn't seem to bothered about it.

Well to be fair, i probably wouldn't have classed him as a rookie either. He's had a lot of experience prior to this year.

The World #1 certainly ain't impressed...

Yes he's had a good year but rory mcilroy 3rd in 2 majors and an absolute demolition of the field at quail hollow! Oh yes and on the winning Ryder cup team! Please! Is this yet another case of protectionism by the pga tour or are they so desperate to win something! Wouldn't have something to do with Rory not joining the tour next year? Maybe the PGA tour just employs the same voting process as FIFA! Come on , fairs fair!"

amazed to see westwood wade in with such a divisive opinion. good to see.

Anyone who thinks that this is anything other than a backlash at Rory for not taking his PGA Tour card next year is dreaming. Rory has had a far better year and made a far bigger impact than Fowler.

Rory verses Fowler..........err no competition. Smells of a fix to me.

Rory can smile at the fact that he's in the top 10 in the world.

Well Fowler would be delighted with that.

The decision isn't wholly unsurprising really. The US PGA Tour has taken an absolute pummelling from the Europeans over the past 6 months or so. We've taken their majors, their Ryder Cup... and now our players are even turning them down. I guess they just don't like it up them!

For so long now they've treated the European Tour and European golfers with disdain and now they're powerless to the fact that they're getting a little back at them.

This is perhaps the only way they see to try and claw something back. And to be honest, they can have it. I'd rather take on course success any day of the week. The Rookie of the Year award, in the grand scheme of things, means absolutely bugger all anyway.

Either that or they are perhaps trying to justify someone of the hype that they (the Tour and US media) have thrown at 'poster boy' Fowler over the past 12 months - something the kid's golf arguably hasn't been able to do.

both the pga & european tours promote theyre own players. the european tour would hardly name a pga member in its end of year awards ho-down

also, the rookie of the year title is held in little esteem either side of the pond. its end of year fluff. something for the media to faff on about and something to help the pga tour to create some copy.

ffs... steve stricker won comeback player of the year 2 years running!

its all a pile a worthless dung. almost as glib as end of year board awards for worst thread and the like!

however, westwoods vehement comments, as world no.1, will raise a few eyebrows stateside. Theyre not used to that sort of frank honesty, that sort of straight talking. Its in stark contrast to the previous world no.1... when he speaks cliched turds of dreariness fall out of his face. Westwoods clearly not afraid to ruffle a few feathers and hopefully by the time the next ryder cup rolls around there'll be some decent bad blood brewing. the last ryder cup was waaay to friendly.

the former world number one did his talking in the bedroom:):) and not on the course of late. But westy is right and to be honest i dont think he gives a feck.. Thats the americans for ya.. He keeps playing the way he is and winning he'll stay number 1. Play the majors etc and good few euro comps and he'll be hard knocked off his perch.(would like to see him win a major) Havin said that i think Kaymer will give him a good run next year. Fowler is a great player as well and he's the Rory of NIR/ireland in america so thats why they have him hyped up as well.

Not surprised by Westwood's rant against the pga tour. He(Westwood) played several events in the US this year (outside of the majors and wgc's) and every time he was grouped with absolute nobodies for rounds 1 & 2 and nowhere near the other marquee players in the draw. Can you imagine that happening to Mickelson or Stricker if they played a few events in Europe?

Agree the rookie of the year award means nothing. Doubt Rory is too upset either. But maybe does go to show the mentality of Finchem and co.

Finchem says rookie "controversy" is good. Someone at pgatour.com took him seriously. Poll asking fans their vote. Rory by 2-1 margin.

now 60% rory -40% fowler with 1400+ votes taken

    That's not a 2:1 margin :) - point well made though!
