First time posting in this particular forum, apologies if this question has been recently asked, or is in the wrong place, etc, please point me towards the appropriate thread if so...
Am wondering where I could buy a decent chess set for my boyfriend. I Want a nice, wooden one if poss, not a childlike plastic one. i am living in cork area, so if anyone knows a good place down these parts, I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise any online recommendations would be great. (bit short on time, though!)
    Many thanks in advance

Hi Corkie100,this may not be much help but have you looked on advert.ie for chess sets, there are some for sale there http://www.adverts.ie/showcat.php?cat=all&si=chess+set&sort=1 .Also if you're interested out in Macroom in the Toy Soldier Factory you're boyfriend could create his own set,not sure what it entails, however these would not be wooden http://www.princeaugust.ie/cork-visitor-centre-activities/index.html .Some examples of these are here under the name of the Edman Collection http://www.edmancollection.com/index.php/cPath/21

When browsing, see if you can get a weighted and felted set, as they will have a bit more heft on the board and a nicer feel. Are you buying a board aswell? You can get travel boards that fold up (maybe taking the pieces inside) or straight boards which look nicer on a coffee table (imho). If buying pieces and board separately, make sure the pieces aren't too big for the board!

some good browsing for ideas from http://www.chess-shop.com/home - they're in New York, but have a comprehensive selection for you to get some ideas from. I like the Staunton style myself, but you can buy all sorts of themed pieces...
