Lads and lassies, don't want to come across as a spammer but I think most of you know me by now so hopefully it's OK to post this. A pretty good deal to be honest! I've posted this on the gambling forum but I reckon some people might be interested here too:

Betfair are promoting their budget petrol market:

BETFAIR, the world’s biggest betting community, today announced an offer which will, quite literally, get punters all pumped up.

Budget 2011 is expected to be the toughest in the history of the State but Betfair are planning to ease the Budget Blues by giving away €50 of free petrol or diesel to any thirsty vehicle which makes it to the pumps at the Maxol Service Station on Mespil Road, Dublin 4, between 10am and 12 noon tomorrow, Monday 6th December.

The offer will no doubt come as a welcome relief to brow beaten motorists and consumers who can only be looking ‘forward’ to Tuesday’s speech by Minister Brian Lenihan with trepidation.

Betfair Spokesman Barry Orr commented today: ‘’Our customers are betting that there will be a significant increase in the price of petrol, so before the inevitable happens, we’re offering a straight up, no strings attached, free fill-up’’

‘’All you have to do is get to the nearest Service Station to Dail Eireann, the Maxol Station on Mespil Road, between 10am and 12 noon and we’ll top up your tank to the tune of €50’’

‘’Hopefully the offer will come as a welcome throwback to the heady, carefree days of the Celtic Tiger before the harsh reality of this Budget hits home on Tuesday afternoon! At Betfair, punters are used to getting better value on their betting but on this occasion, we felt we needed to go a step further to put a smile, however fleeting, back on the face of the Irish Public”

By how much duty will Minister Lenihan add to a litre of Petrol in his 2011 Budget Speech: 9-4 8c or under, 2-5 Over 8c

Sorry - don't have a link yet but as some people on here know, I do a few bits and pieces for Betfair and can confirm that it's a genuine press release that has gone out.

No strings by the way - just fifty quid of petrol.

Ok fair enough...So its bedlam on that road where the petrol station is tomorrow....I know it could be a free €50 of petrol but at what cost....An hour in a long line of cars, then when you get to the pump all the petrol could be gone...

A great marketing trick for betfair all the same...

Pretty irresponsible of Betfair to announce this now IMO, considering the state of the roads and paths, the last thing we need is a thousand cars flocking to one petrol station for free petrol in a tiny two hour window. That particular station is also tiny, and will cause chaos on that road and surrounds. Free €50 petrol may sound good but IMO its an irresponsible and badly planned marketing gimmic.

    +1

Could backfire in a big way. Very foolish and will cause chaos. Traffic will be backed up to Dolphins Barn and Ringsend. This garage has like 2 pumps so the throughput is going to be very slow. Avoid the canal in the morning.

is that why that garage was chosen? say it takes 3 ,mins on average to put in €50, get back into car and drive off (also assuming no one goes into the shop) If there are only 2... 20 cars per hour x 2 pumps x €50 x 2 hours = €4000 Also betfair could have possibly negotiated a discount if they are giving the garage that much trade. I dont think the idea is bad, but I think the timing, is crazy!

Traffic was mental. I was queuing for about 15mins and then when I finally got to the garage, I was forced by the Garda to move along.. Gutted, so I did a U turn and tried again, and got in on my second attempt :)

Ppl were getting agro and annoyed cause they couldn’t get in. One time I seen a Garda threatening a guy in a merc with prosecution if he didn't move on as he was blocking the road

€50 quid of free diesel, can’t believe it!! Thanks OP!!!!!!!!!

The Gardaì that were there were absolute pricks. There was a space when I moved up towards the garage and they were telling me to move on so I indicated to go into the queue and one of them starts shouting "MOVE ON, YOU'RE HOLDING UP THE TRAFFIC" when I clearly wasn't as it wasn't moving anyway. When I tried to get into the spot one of the ***** jumps in front of the car into the spot and then says "You're after crashing into me!" How the fcuk can I 'crash' into you going about 1mph? Knobhead on a power trip

    Thanks anyway OP

Sorry to hear but yea they did seem to be getting more annoyed with the public as time went on. It started off with only 1 gard but by the time I was leaving there was about 10 of them with a few jeeps and cars

With the state the country is in I think the Guards should have been at the top of the queue getting the free fuel for the squad cars :D save the tax payers a few quid.

What a terrible marketing idea, seriously:

They announce it the night before it happens.

    It's completely impractical.

It has absolutely no relevance to betting.

It's extremely bad value per potential customer for them.

It's doesn't target their market in any way.
