I just popped to the shop and there's about twenty Army lads clearing the pavements of the village.

    Fair play to them.

Nice to see people appreciating the DF going outside of their job description and lending a hand

We pay all the civil servants, bin men and garda's wages. You are certainly not going to get a civil servant out on the streets clearing ice. The army however despite not being responsible (the local councils / corporations are the ones who are responsible) for this type of work.

The army do it with out complaint. They also fill the gaps and dig in during any other type of event from floods to bin collection. Even though it is outside of their remit. Civil servants give out when they lose their "half day to xmas shopping day"....I can imagine what would happen if a civil servant was asked to roll sleeves up and dig in.

So how about showing some appreciation.

They were in Ratoath clearing footpaths last Thursday. I left work early and recorded them on my way home:

On Friday they were in both Kilmessan and Maynooth from talking to folks.

    Fair play to them.

It would be good training too I suppose ;)

The Defence Forces have two main roles inside Irish territory. One is obvious; defend it against external aggression and the second is providing assistance to civil authorities. That includes bomb disposal, cash escorts, etc etc and in extreme circumstances the Defence Forces can be called upon to perform other tasks which they'll happily fulfill if they have a capability to do so and you'll be surprised as to what expertise is available ranging from airtraffic control to providing a bit of muscle and shovels to the council to clear snow and ice.

Mostly concentrated on the footpaths lad.
5th and 27th battalion looking after the Meath area AFIAK.
we've been in Wicklow around Blessington, Baltinglass and Rathdrum.
Man did they get hit hard.
Good bit fell here last night, what's it like there?

    Thats a very ignorant comment.
How much would you pay a man to risk his life as the lads did last week dismantling the primed mortars while most of us were safe in our beds. Admit it you haven't the faintest idea what the DF do? Try and inform yourself a bit better about what work the Defense Forces actually do in this country. As for pay - 40 hours, 70 hours and more a week with no over time and no excuses or complaints.

Any DF reading this - THANKS for your help.

Trim got a good pasting last night, i thanked the heavens i got home when I did. No more than 15 minutes after getting home, there were cars in the estate that couldnt move. Snowing a tiny bit now, but yet another snow day from work. Thank Santa for remote access to the office.

I must say that getting up at 8.45 and sitting in trackies working beats 3 hours of fighting through ice and dangerous idiots on the M4. Thats a side benefit :)

Too bad, would have been tea, coffee and buns for the gang if you'd been around here.

About 7 to 8 inches here last night btw.

Same in Navan. Cars couldn't get into or out of driveways. Not snowing at the moment but looks immanent.
    Thank God for 4WD.
