re-housing a set of speakers

Well I took it on myself as a small project to re-house a set of hi-fi speakers.

I've done the dismantling work and done some temporary wiring and the sound is working properly coming from an Ipod via 3.5mm plug connected to the speaker's stereo wire (which I intend to solder eventually).

However, as the only thing powering the speakers is the Ipod's battery, the volume is quite low as you would expect.

So I'm here asking if anyone knows how i could go about wiring in a battery pack or mains connection?

    What I have:
    (2x) 4 Ohm 10 Watt speakers
    speaker wire
a 3.5mm plug to male RCA jack adapter

    P.S.
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place or anything... I'm still learning!

You need an amplifier between the speakers and the iPod, not a battery pack, that would likely fry the iPod.

If you want something portable, you could get a small amp designed for use in a car and power it with a 12v motorcycle or alarm system battery. Amp power leads would be connected to the battery, iPod would be connected to the amp inputs and the speakers would be connected to the amp outputs.

If you don't need something battery operated and portable, you could save yourself a lot of grief and just get a commercially available iPod dock that runs off mains, has an amp and speakers already inbuilt and a dock connector you just plug the ipod into. Something like this:

thanks for the suggestions, not quite what i was getting at though.

i was inspired by this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Retro-Wireless-Speakers-from-Ikea-Salad-Bowls/

but im looking to make a simpler version with speakers i had lying around.

maybe i should open up the stereo that came with the speakers (no longer used) and rehouse the mains power unit etc.

by the way i have a commercial dock, im just trying to do this as a project

    hey cnocbui

you seem to know your stuff, thought id ask you...

do you reckon this will do the trick?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003ZLMFE0/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A2577ZPOD5AVPC

looks small enough to fit inside some housing i could make too.

That looks like it would work. Just need a 12v DC power source of about 1.5 amps or greater.

    like this?

a universal one to hopefully fit the plug on the amp.

That should do the trick. If none of the plugs fit you could just cut the cord and open up the amp and solder the leads to the back of the power socket or to the circuit board where the socket connects to it.

To be honest unless you're determined to do a "project" you'd pick up computer speakers that would sound better for less.

The point being made to you is that the OP is doing this as a project, your comment to the OP is not helpful, and your response to cnocbui is bordering on rude. Please modify your posting style or take a break from posting here.
