I just bought a great 50's telecaster a week ago and im just after noticing that the strings are seperated in pairs... as in the E and A are closer than the A and the D, but the D and the G are closer etc. Is this normal?

Three-barrel bridges are normal for Telecasters of that time.

If you don't like it you can always change it to have a saddle for each string.

Some people prefer the sound with 3 while others prefer it with 6. It really depends on the player.
