I hope to get DTT set up on an sd tv due to budget restrictions. I am situated in Kinvara in south Galway. What would be needed to do so

If you get a good signal on RTE1 and 2 at present and aerial is on chimney all you need is a DTT box but it must do HD now as RTE2 is HD.

I think this is the cheapest bet

    and its pretty good.

I have just done what you are attempting to do. I had the four analogue terrestrial tv stations from an aerial in the attic. I got a saorview DTT set top box, easy as pie to set up even for the likes of me who is not technically minded. Just connect the aerial antenna to the set top box and the set top box to the tv by way of a scart lead.

To save yourself grief and the strong possibility of incompatibility, only purchase a set top box with the "Saorview" logo on it, this will ensure it has Mpeg4 and is High Definition ready.

I am delighted with the picture quality on mine, best of luck.

You'll need a UHF aerial(if you dont have one already. It'll probably need to be pointed to Maghera. External aerial on chimney or gable for best results.

After that you'll need an MPEG4 DTT receiver as mentioned above. The Saorview certed one is best.
