Car I just sold has been clocked, what should I do ?

    Hi All,

Firstly, I will keep all Garages and car makes and specs confidential and will not implicate anybody in this post.

A month ago I sold a car to garage A for cash. The car has now turned up at garage B a couple weeks later.

Firstly the mileage advertised has been reduced by about 6% but just enough to make the selling mileage seem less significant.

It is also being advertised as 1 owner from new when there has been 2 as the car was imported.

(I specifically checked the mileage before I sold the car as I had to send an email to Garage A to give hime the details of the exact milage)

    Any ideas ?

Report to Gardai, this is fraud and you wouldn't want it to happen to you. The fact that you've posted it here tells me you are concerned and will probably report it. Well spotted by the way.

report it to the guards and give them any information or details ya have about the car

Have you actually seen the car or just the ad? ie, a 6% reduction in mileage could just be a case of rounding down for the sake of the ad or an error in the ad itself?

You could make discreet enquiries with Garage B as to where car came from. Directly from Garage A (in which case it may have been tampered with there) or did it come from a private seller? In which case Garage A or private seller (unlikely unless a mechanic) may have clocked it. Problem is Garage B may have done it.....

Ah never mind, do what the others advised, let the Gardai sort it out.

This is a no brainer -you have to report this.

How would you feel if you bought a car and subsequently found that you had been screwed by the garage.

You can ring the consumer regulator on LoCall 1890 432 432.

6% - hardly worth it for them - are you sure it's not a typo?
    What was the mileage?
If the car is an import - will the reg cert on show the number of irish owners only.
Contact the garage that is selling the car and ask them what the story is? Be straight up with them.
Give us details of the car - you don't have to name garages.

Exactly, 6% is perhaps rounding down slightly, maybe putting in 50k instead of 53k in the advert to make it look more attractive. Unless you see the odometer in the advert and it is put back I would take it as a typo/sales technique.

Not too far off was 50+ now 49k. To me some people have that psyhcological think of, 'oh, well there's 50k+ on the car, etc'.

I sold an 06 GTI a few after 18 months with 65,000km on it as I knew any more and people would start the usual about the milage, kms had just taken over from miles on the ODOs.

See your point, although we were the only private seller and supposedly the only owner yet this car was imported.

Maybe they got advert wrong as they are providing a cartell report also.
    I'll make some enquires.

it shouldn't matter if its 6% or 60% ..... IF the car is being clocked (and I would suggest the OP actually check the car before reporting it) ..... then report the matter to the gardai for them to investigate.

there was a guy jailed recently for clocking imports (jeffrey beere - jailed for 12months - sold 3 cars that the gardai were aware of)

Totally agree here. Car Dealers hardly ever get it completely right with the mileage, intentionally or not, untill such time you have actually seen the clock you cannot be sure if it's clocked. Call them as a potential buyer and ask them for the ecxact mileage before you report anybody.

Come on Lads. You are advising to report someone to the Garda without any evidence whatsoever other than a bit of text on a website? Anyone seen my snowman? It had a fork for a nose and two pound coins for eyes.

    This is stupid

OP DID NOT SEE THE CAR AS BEING CLOCKED HES GOING BY AN AD IN THE PAPER

    Possibly
    REAL MILEAGE 53K
    AD 50K

Oh jesus better call the fraud squad and have 2 garages raided

For once RoverJames speaks some sense :p

OP if I was you I'd go have a look at the car pretending to be a potential buyer and see for myself. Anything could be going on here, it might even be your car in the pics and not yours for sale, a lot of these 'fly by night' garages just put any old pics up

I'll be going past the garage next Friday and I'll drop in.

The car is our old car, I recognise the reg.

If a garage is going to go to the hassle of clocking a car surely they would knock more than 6% off of the mileage?

Check the facts first. But its worth checking it. Thats the right thing to do.

Would the dealer make the same mistake when counting the money you paid him for the car. Ah I'll just round it down 6%, that'll do. Your fooling yourself if you think dealers make those mistakes. I'm talking from a position where I know what the position is. Report it to the National Consumer Agency on consumerdirect.ie or nca.ie The NCA can do the checks with the garages discretely and if there's no action needed no one the wiser.eek.gif
