Why don't the DAA or someone come up with pay power sockets at airport terminals?

It is very annoying when your flight is delayed and you have to use your laptop or charge a phone and there is no power sockets about. I was stuck at shannon a while back and ended up unplugging a light in a display cabinet to get power, I was soon told to move. :D

At the Ryanair terminal at Dublin airport I can usually get a socket in the bar but this usually obliges me to purchase a pint or walk a distance from the departure gate. A few pay as you use sockets would not go astray about the place. 1 euro an hour max, anything more would be a rip off, they would soon recoup their costs.

    Ipod chargers as well.

There's a bit of money to be made in that actually; if you had a concession for charging laptops/ipods/phones.

Singapore Changi is the place to go for best practice.

When I transitted there en route Australia 3 years ago there were hundreds of FREE internet stations and plug in points for laptops throughout the terminal.

No doubt the designers of Dublin's T2 have provided the same level of customer service.

I've noticed in a number of US airports that they have charging stations which are usually branded so i imagine no cost to the airport operator. An example is a Samsung charging station i seen at EWR. It has various different outlets on it from regular mains to mini-USB. Great idea imo.

Edit: Here's an article on the very thing i mentioned:http://www.slashphone.com/samsung-mobile-charging-station-reaches-newark-liberty-international-airport-261394

    Laptop uses maybe 30Watts

so wouldn't even use 20c worth of electricity if running 24 hours
Meters and managing it would cost more than the electricity

there are usually power points at the pay for internet access kiosks

TBH the big problems are having enough availabe seats / cables are a trip hazard

At a guess they would charge €1 for half an hour or something, any more and it would be cheaper carrying a second battery , any less and it wouldn't appeal to the greed of the bean counters

It wouldn't take much to roll out 4 or 6 tabled seats based at every departure gate, up against a wall or window in a designated area, there would be no tripping over cables.

There is a lot more maintenance and expense in running PC terminals, for starters you need someone skilled in IT to maintain them, you also have wear and tear. Not much can happen to a power socket apart from the odd ELCB tripping which is unlikely. The outlay of hardware is once of and I couldn't see that too prohibitive.

London City Airport is well equiped in this manner.
Access to power sockets is free of charge too.

One would always consider London City as "premier class" ie you would never get the likes of Ryanair or Aer Lingus flying there. :p

True, London City Airport is considered "premier class" as it is primarily used by business passengers and is the closest of the many airports serving London to the financial districts in Docklands and The Square Mile.

However as Dublin Airport is the only airport serving Dublin surely one should expect facilities to suit all passengers, "premier" and "Ryanair" alike. :p

I's sure a couple of ATR 72-500's wouldn't be beyond O'Learys reach.

    No, I'm sure it wouldn't.

However, that's hypothetical stuff, I prefer to deal with current fleets bud.

    Y'know, reality.

I've seen Oracle-branded charging stations in Frankfurt airport. Schiphol has occasional benches with free power outlets.

Typically Dublin has next to none.

    RyanAir used to have ATR's

They're starting to show up in American airports, but you shouldn't expect to see them at any airport you go to. It's more a matter that they're being installed as part of routine airport refurbishment or as part of the construction of new terminals, they're not being retrofitted around here just for the sake of putting recharging terminals too often. There are exceptions, of course, but not many.

    NTM
