overflowing sink

I live in a ground floor apt, with 4 apts immediately above. Recently water has begun to come up through the plug hole in my sink in the kitchen and also flow into my washing machine. All the pipework connecting the sink and washing machine drains have been checked and are clear within the apt. The water is not flowing in all the time;sometimes it only fills the sink and is easy to bale out but at other times I have had to bale out 9 or 10 buckets of water. It is almost as if a bath is being emptied in an apt above and the waste water is unable to go where it is supposed to and is forcing its way up into my sink . I got a drain clearing company out and they could not find a blockage but are going to try approaching the problem from below at the main sewers. Any advice/ solutions???

Hard to know, but because you're on the ground floor, my initial reaction would be that there is SOME sort of issue in the main sewers causing it to back up.

Have you lifted any manhole covers outside to see if the manholes are backed up with water?

Get on to the management company to see if they can help, if u are sure its not the pipework in your apartment. they should sort it because its why they charge you a fee every year. Also ask the people upstairs if they are having the same problem more than likely not but its worth a shot.

    Hi Dev

This is not a normal problem and if you got a drain clearing company in you will have to pay it.

This is not fair considering all apts above share the drain.

It would be no harm contacting citizen information for your rights here

but my first port of call would be a management company if you have one.

If the builder sits on the management company it would be no harm in seeing him/her.
