I bought a a HD box in France and receive RTE on DTT with it. Reception is great most of the time but sometimes i get the picture breaking up, pixalation sort of thing. Also sometimes the sound can go out of sync with the picture. Any ideas what might cause this or anyone else have the same problem.

Sound out of sync seems like the hardware. Does it go away after a reboot ?

Breakup would be down to signal levels usually but may be hardware related.

What type of aerial setup do you have ?

Too much or too little RF.

You are using an indoor aerial, probably amplified ?

Look after your signal quality meter - does it vary much ?

Yes, too much amplification is as bad as poor signal. Analogue doesn't mind too much signal as much, though if you know what to look for you can see the distortion.

If you have Analogue, check. If no snow/noise at all then it's probably too much signal.

I live in Galway City and cannot get a stable signal from Tonabrocky, on channel 26.

Regardless of how high I get the quality meter, the picture will break up and pixelate at random intervals. The quality reading stays stable.

I use a contract group A aerial mounted on an outside wall with good quality coax coming into the receiver.

I've used both the TV (LG) and PC with PCI card to test the signal but both have the same breakup problems.

Sounds like Hardware - does the box run hot ?

Do you have the aerial horizontal or vertical. Should be vertical. You try a C/D aerial for Maghera?

Thanks for the replies lads. I have a big old aerial on the roof which is basically horizontal bar with elements sticking out along the length and a v piece at the end. It was used for bbc etc and is connected to an amplifier and distributed about the house. The reception from it isn't great. Would i be better to buy a digital aerial. I use s freesat box for all the non irish channels.

Did anyone ask already where you are? Do you know what transmitter you are picking up Saorview from or where the aerial is pointed.

No such thing as a digital aerial, just an aerial.

You say your existing aerial picked up BBC etc. do you have a specific aerial for the Irish channels? Existing aerial probably needs to be realigned to a transmitter broadcasting the Irish channels.

Have you tried Maghera (channel 48) instead ? No signal at all from Tonabrocky in Oranmore, but Maghera is quite strong.

I'll need to get a the correct aerial for that, as the Group A only brings in 2% quality on Maghera as would be expected.

Do you know of any good suppliers in Galway where I can get a C/D contract aerial? I got the Group A 10 element from tvtrade.ie but would like to avoid another online purchase and the associated delivery headache.

Afraid I have no knowledge of local suppliers.

For what its worth I'm using a yagi type loft aerial from B&Q which I bought, without having done any research, a few years ago for analogue. Think it was about 30 euro. It does the job for DTT.

Do O'Conners in Galway sell television equipment?

    They do, very overpriced though.

The NI channels aerial is completely inadequate to picking up the Saorview signal in Drogheda. You need a second aerial to pick up the RTE analogue or digital channels. The second aerial can be joined to the original one with an appropriate combiner. These can be got off the internet or in places like FES electrical in town.
