If I were to spend 3 months in SE-Asia, how much would I need?

I am thinking of going over for their 3 months next year, probably in March-April, when it hopefully won't be too much because of monsoon season. (Even though it will be average mid-20s still) I will do Thailand-Laos-Cambodia-Singapore. But I would like to visit Indoseia and Malaysia aswell

I was thinking along the lines of €120 a week average. Obviously in Bangkok/Singapore it will be more, around €40-€50 per day to live comfortably. What do ye think?

Other parts of thailand can be quiet expensive (more so than Bangkok) such as Koh samui, Koh phangnan (esp around full moon) and koh phi phi, If money is tight in Thailand perhaps try to avoid Travel agents or booking all inclusive things. Malaysia isn't as cheap as some places either (although it's cheaper than Singapore) and I don't know about Laos and Indonesia. Get some US dollars for Cambodia before you go, check when the exchange rate is good, and while I think you can get by on 120 a mth, you should probably budget more if you want to actually do stuff....treks, paraseiling, shopping, adventure sports, diving/day-trips etc. If you are able to shop around great, but remember that might involve a good bit of walking in monsoon rains...If you are happy enough just to see everything you'll have plenty of money...practice your haggling skills while smiling, now and enjoy! You will love it!

€17 per day??? That's quite a tight budget even for SE Asia! I suppose it depends on what you want to see etc... From memory I think we paid €24 for our passes to Ankor Wat alone. Be prepared for endless bus journeys and substandard hostels. :( If you could double your budget you would be so much more conmfortable, easier said then done I know...

I'm sorry, I didn't calculate the proper amount. I put in €120 a week but meant €20 a day, which is €140. I based my information on:
However, budget travelers who are careful with what they spend will still find 1,000 baht will get a backpacker a dorm bed or cheap room, three square meals a day and leave enough for transport, sightseeing, and even partying.

I was thinking if this is the price for Bangkok (with 1000BHT = €25), that this was the most per day as Bangkok is the capital, and being cheaper elsewhere. I would be able to pay more, €35 a day. €40 a day seems to be getting into step territory IMO, the average monthly wage in Thailand is less than that!

I would still pay for 1st class train/bus rides. Or domestic airliner if it is the most viable. (But I like to see the scenery on the trips)

Still not a lot of money, remember, you get what you pay for, even in Thailand.

In 2007 our flights from Chaing Mai to Bangkok were €30, obviously the bus was a lot less but it took up to 14 hours if I recall and went at night.

The cheap tourist buses in SE Asia which you see advertised are old, unreliable and over packed. They hardly ever arrive on time!

I'm sure your budget is do-able but you will need to do a lot of research before you go, it doesn't give you a lot of room for maneuver.

Also, in my experience, Thailand was the cheaper of all the SE Asia countries, I was actually kind of surprised how much more expensive Vietnam was.

Best of luck, if you need any other more specific help feel free to pm

I found out I am entitled to pay away from work, so i'd be able to get €250 a week for the duration of my stay. That's €35 a day spread over a week, if I were to add €15 a day. Would €50 be a good budget per day?

Is Laos and Cambodia cheap than Thailand? Could I live alright for €25 a day in those countries while I recuperate some money.

When you are in Bangkok I recommend you stay in a little-known guesthouse called, wait for it, the Sea Of Love Mansion http://seaoflovemansion.com/ Don't let the fact that from the website it looks like a brothel, it's very much not that. I stayed there for just over a week, and for 400BHT a night you will get your own private room, with cable and private bathroom. It's quite close to the Phra Ram 9 metro station (10 minute walk) and you can see a more local, less touristy side of Bangkok.

I will have a look at that website!

Is €50 a day good in Thailand?
