Can anyone tell me if the car battery is covered under most car warranties, specifically mazdas three year warranty. The car was bought new in 2008 and the battery was dead this morning.

    NO.

Batteries generally have a 2 year warranty but not covered under manufacturers warranty..

Alot of people are experiencing the same problem as you did regardless of the make or model of car - it's the cold weather unfortunately and most of the calls to the AA and RAC this time of year are battery issues.

The battery is classed as a consumable component similar to tyres and is not covered under the standard manufacturer's warranty.

your Mazda warranty includes breakdown cover too, they will come out and give you a jumpstart but probably not a replacement battery, I know this cuz I accidently left the interior light on in a 2008 Mazda6 and ran the battery down and they sorted me out :o

Interesting, for all of my life I have assumed that a battery will probably die in the first cold spell after it's third birtday or so. However, my wife's 2001 Ka still has the original one.

Thats very good . Must be some sort of record IMO. My cars still has the same battery for over 3 and a half years so I have been taking my booster pack in the car with me lately just in case but so far so good :).

Thanks, guys. I thought consumable parts such as the battery and brakes aren't covered by the manufacturers warranty but my papa seemed adamant they are.

As Absurdum said the three year mazda warranty includes breakdown cover, so they sent out a towtruck and the guy jump-started the car. I must say I was pretty impressed with the service.

I thought this might be of relevance to someone, the battery was flat again and the garage replaced the nearly three year old battery under warranty.

Well done Mr. Mazda; it's good to hear a positive main-dealer / garage story for a change.

Do you mind me asking which Mazda dealer it was? We dealt with the one in Drogheda, excellent service from them.

Way back in the day, VW used to have a one year vehicle warranty but the battery had a three year warranty.

The recent trend seems to be that the battery is considered a 'wear and tear' item and is not covered under warranty by a variety of manufacturers.

This sort of makes sense. If you bought (for example) a personal stereo that came with rechargeable batteries, it's unlikely that that batteries would be covered by the warranty. There are so many variables that can affect the battery.

That said, the battery should have a certain amount of expected longevity.

I forgot to name the garage, it was Newcastle Garage in Wicklow. Extremely helpful and great after service over the last few years, they even collect the car from the house for services. They are also dealers for Seat if anyone is looking for a new car with a great after service. Wish I could say the same about Mazda MSL in Blackrock.
