Like the title says, how does it work?

All I know is I fill the tank with oil and I have heat but I have no idea how it all works.
I have an immersion which I never use because the water is always warm from the radiators?

oil is set alight in an enclosed combustion chamber
water is circulated around this chamber ,warming up and circulated around your radiators
this warm water is also circulated around your cylinder in turn warming your hot water ;)

oil is used to fire the burner which heats a chamber, around the chamber is water which is in your heating system, the water gets hot and a water circulating pump then pumps it around your radiators and hot tank. there are flow and return pipes, flow is the hot (in pipe) to the radiator and return is the cooler pipe going back to the boiler to be reheated again.

there is a coil inside your hot water tank and the heating system water is pumped around this coil heating the water around it (stored water), once hot you then have hot water at your taps.

when the return pipe to the boiler reaches your desired temperature set on the boiler thermostat the burner (red box at the boiler normally) turns off so it is no longer using oil. once the temperature drops again the burner will fire and reheat the water in the boiler to e.g. 65 degrees then cut off again once its warm enough. its usually on for 2mins and off for 3mins or something similar.

ignoring the flashing bits.. this gives you an idea of pipework and how everything is joined together

We are after moving into our first home so I am interested in how these things actually work and this topic has been helpful so far. A few questions, does the water for the shower come from the water tank in the attic or the hot water cylinder? The same question for the water for the toilet cisterns? How do the hot/cold taps work exactly for the bathroom/kitchen etc? Initially the water coming out of the hot water tap is cold but this then warms up, how??
