All credit to iTunes, when I emailed their customer support, they responded very quickly and where very helpful. Was able to download all my music and apps again (free of charge). Only lost a few songs that are no longer on itunes. Guess I'll backup this time !!!!!!

Any song/app you buy is linked to your itunes account..if it gets deleted just simply download it again and it will tell you that you've already purchased the item and it will download.

I thought that only worked with apps and apple were reluctant to allow it on songs. I've read that a few times here

It will allow you to download apps again, but asked you if you want to buy the song again. Customer support have loaded my old libary into my download updates, song, apps, book etc, otherwise I'd have to remember all the songs, find them etc etc. A few people had told me that Apple wouldn't do this, but like I said, credit to them.

So, what do you want for Christmas, then? If you use a Mac, it might be one of these, or there are all kinds of backup drives for the PC. If you have just one copy of anything, it doesn't really exist ...

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

You will be able to freely redownload applications, but if you click the purchase button on music you will be charged again. The correct thing to do if you lose music and don't have a backup is to contact iTunes Store support like the OP did.
