I just discovered the guy behind misfits is currently writing the TV series for Dirk Gently for the BBC.

as a massive Douglas Adams fan, this has made my day!

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1758599/

And while I pictured Dirk as quite a broad figure (ala Nick Frost) I can see Stephen Mangan doing a great job of it.

Woo-hoo! No idea when it will be on, but as it's in post production, hopefully before summer.

    Dirk Gently(Drama)
    BBC 4
    Thur 16th Dec 2010 21:00 BBC Four
    Fri 17 Dec 2010 01:10 BBC Four
    Fri 17 Dec 2010 03:40 BBC Four
    Sat 18 Dec 2010 22:30 BBC HD

Drama featuring writer Douglas Adams's holistic detective Dirk Gently, who operates based on the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. An investigation into a missing cat is inextricably linked to a chance encounter with an old friend, an exploding warehouse, a missing billionaire and a plate of biscuits.

Dirk Gently (real name Svlad Cjelli) was Douglas Adams other main fictional construct from the mid 80s, the books were notable for their spectacular descriptions of events almost impossible to conceive of. Needless to say BBC4 doesn't have the budget to do the undoable so its an origional screenplay based on the characters.

Thanks for the headsup. If done correctly, could be a decent series

Looking forward to this. Wasnt sold straight away on Stephen Mangan as Dirk but he seems good based on that quick trailer.

I was hoping the sofa would be in it though... :pac:

Is Dirk Gently the character who was psychic? Or am I thinking of some other Douglas Adams character.

    It's on tomorrow on BBC4!

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/a293339/stephen-mangan-wants-more-dirk-gently.html

Stephen Mangan has admitted that he is keen to film more episodes of Dirk Gently.

The actor will appear as the unconvential detective in an hour-long BBC Four adaptation of Douglas Adams' 1987 novel Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.

"[The episode] has elements of both novels, but we've only got an hour to do justice to the storylines and characters," he told SFX. "It doesn't contain some of the great characters from the books, but hopefully they'll turn up later on."

He jokingly added: "Plus, it'll be nice when we do our 12-part series and we're on our ninth year on the BBC that there's still original Adams material to be used."

Mangan also dismissed the suggestion that he was an unsuitable choice to play the character, who is overweight in the original novels.

"I probably could put on eight stone, but I don't want to," he said. "Firstly they hired me so they're obviously after some of the qualities that I possess. I brought a bit of who I am, what I find funny [and] what I find interesting to it."

Dirk Gently will air this Thursday at 9pm on BBC Four.

Worth it, pretty enjoyable so far and true to the book.

Twas okay Nick Frost would have been a good Gently - rather disreputable and shabby. I doubt they'll spin a series out of it myself.

I've not read the books but the show definitely had an Adams feel to it.I thought it was ok...and Helen Baxendale is always nice to look at.

Thought it was a bit too simplified though i understand they couldnt do a direct translation, still wouldnt mind a few more episodes

A new 3 part series of Dirk Gently will be starting on BBC4 on Monday March 5th @ 9.00pm.

I enjoyed the first series so I'm looking forward to this.

In this, the first of three episodes, Douglas Adams' private detective discovers the connection between two unrelated cases: a client who believes the Pentagon are trying to kill him and another whose horoscopes appear to be coming true. When the mysteries collide, Dirk is the only man for the job.

Stephen Mangan plays Dirk, Darren Boyd plays Macduff, Jason Watkins plays DI Gilks, Lisa Jackson plays Janice, Paul Ritter plays Oliver, Cosima Shaw plays Emma, Ken Collard plays Matthew, Colin McFarlane plays Terrence and Miranda Raison plays Kate.

Just watched the first episode of this and I thought it was brilliant. Pretty close to the humour from the book and I thought Stephen Mangan was great as Dirk.

Hope they expand it beyond a three part series.

I was kind of hoping this might have been Dirk Kuyt's soft porn debut.

It gives me no pleasure whatsoever to report that the BBC have decided not to make any more #DirkGently.

Thats a shame, I enjoyed it.
A BBC spokesman said the channel is concentrating funds on foreign imports. “We’ve loved having Dirk on the channel but the licence fee freeze means less British drama on BBC Four.
“In future we will focus on the best dramas from around the globe, like The Killing and Borgen, whilst BBC One and BBc Two become the main homes of original British drama.”

BBC America has given an eight-episode order to an adaptation of the Douglas Adams novel series “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” written by Max Landis.

“Dirk Gently” is a cult-favorite property from the novelist known for his “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” series. The series is co-produced by AMC Studios, Ideate Media and comic book publisher IDW Entertainment with Circle of Confusion producing. Exec producers are Landis, Ideate’s Arvind Ethan David and Zainir Aminullah, IDW Entertainment’s Ted Adams and David Ozer and David Alpert and Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion.

The series will follow the surreal adventures of the highly unconventional detective and his reluctant assistant Todd as they navigate one big metaphysical mystery per season. A four-episode adaptation of “Dirk Gently” starring Stephen Mangan aired on BBC4 in 2010 and 2012.

” ‘Dirk Gently’ is a very original series, fresh and unlike anything else. The novels have legions of fans, and with Max Landis’ brilliant and audacious take on this material we are excited to bring Dirk to life for our BBCA super-fans,” said BBC America president Sarah Barnett.

From what I can gather, They're making him American & setting it there, which kind of sucks...

Elijah Wood cast in new production

BBC America has announced that Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood has been cast in its upcoming adaptation of author Douglas Adams’ (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Doctor Who) wildly successful comic novels Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, which Adams, himself, described as a “thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic.” Whew!

The actor will be playing Dirk Gently's reluctant assistant, Todd, in the new original scripted series, set to premiere in the fall of 2016. Penned by Max Landis (Chronicle), the eight-episode, one-hour TV show is a co-production of AMC Studios, IDEATE MEDIA and IDW Entertainment. Circle of Confusion is producing.

Haven't actually watched any of the previous ones, but keep meaning to.
I was put off by the original casting; I find Mangan incredibly annoying to watch (and not in the way I expect Gently to be annoying :) ), and am not sure I could get past that to actually give it a proper chance.

I know nothing about the American that has been cast (Samuel Barnett), but it sounds more likely to work to me. Personally, I think he even looks more suited to the part.

Although Douglas Adam's writing in general is very British, I'm not sure Dirk needs to be British or to stay in Britain, he's definitely an odd-ball, but not a very specifically British odd-ball from what I remember.

I'd prefer to see it be good and American, instead of poor and British (again, haven't watched anything, so just general thoughts really)

There's a trailer up here now
