If you were a fan of Shawn Ryan, you'd be more excited. The Shield is one of my all time favourite TV shows - if this even comes close to that greatness, I'll be a happy chappie.

The Chicago Code (formerly Ride-Along) is a new police drama from creator Shawn Ryan that stars Jason Clark (Brotherhood) and Jennifer Beals (Lie to Me). The scheduled premiere date is Monday the 7th of February 2011.

I never saw the other thread so thanks for the merge ;)

Shawn Ryan plus Jason Clark and Matt Lauria is a win win for me :)

Any Shieldies lined up for it? A load of them turned up on Lie To Me a while back.

This is starting tonight. Damn good buzz about it too. Definitely looks like one to watch.

    Some choice quotes from here:

… it's clear Shawn Ryan knows a thing or two about dramatizing dysfunctional big-city police forces. He proved it with his groundbreaking FX series The Shield, and he proves it again with this latest winning take on crime and corruption … twists agreeably without losing sight of its moral ambiguities …

… What works best about the series is that Lindo and Clarke are forces of nature; you can’t take your eyes off their characters. Code is not a game-changer in a genre that likely won’t be changed again for some time, but judging by the first three episodes it’s already gripping television and Fox has found a competitive new drama.

… a cop drama rather than a cop show, exploring the nature of political and personal corruption instead of presenting a nifty case to solve each week. … Lindo makes a meal of the character, with extra helpings and sauce on the side. He is just so bad but so believably bad, self-righteous and self-involved, convinced that he is doing what's best for the city, and if it means a little more for him then so be it. … a show that breaks the network code, and that alone is worth watching.

… The show is point-blank, but somewhat brilliantly so. … Too many cop shows are fat and predictably lazy from the get-go, relying too much on smartphones and lab results; "The Chicago Code" feels like an old-fashioned and vigorous foot pursuit.

Definitely interested in this one seeing as how Shawn Ryan created one of the best cop shows ever in "The Shield". It'd be wonderful if we could have two excellent cop shows airing at the same time (the other being "Southland").

My only worry for the show is that it is on Fox but I hope it gets the ratings to survive

But is it more of a (water down) cable show ala Lone Star?

Just finished watching this. I was a little unsure of it at first but there's some interesting characters and the story is good if a little contrived.

The main detective and chief of police in particular were very good.

I found it much better than the Blue Bloods pilot anyway.

It says a lot about a poster when they dismiss a Shawn Ryan show as just another police procedural. Anyone with any interest or knowledge of television would recognise Ryan's greatness. The Shield is one of the all time greats, truly an exceptional show which got better and better with each season. The Unit was equally as good, while it lacked the intensity and overall arc of the Shield it was essential viewing for at least the first two seasons, unfortunately it got a little too much melodramatic with the wives stories.

Terriers was one of last years best shows, I watched all of season one over the course of one night, an absolutely stunning show which had so much potential to become another all time great but unfortunately the loyal, returning viewer figures wasnt good enough to ensure continuation.

Watching the Chicago COde and it's damn good cop drama, to call it a watered down cable show is a disservice. Just because it's a network show does not mean that it cannot be as hard hitting as a cable drama. The only difference is the delivery, the lack of swearing was very well handled with Clarke's character repeatedly stating to partners that he does not appreciate it. Personally I found it an inventive and comical way to explain the lack of "fuck" every few minutes.

Anyone kept up with this? Much better than Blue Bloods. Hope it doesn’t get cancelled although looks like it might.

Yes, I'm really enjoying it and I know loads of the critics like it too, so that doesn't bode too well...

Yeah keeping up with it too. It smashes Blue Bloods in every way really!

Interesting to see Mr Ryan hooked his wife up with a role in it too!

A pretty decent pilot there, did a solid enough job with launching a few threads and the characters. A good bit ahead of Blue Bloods, but that's not too surprising. The lack of needing to talk, in that obvious procedural way, about the body on the ground was quite welcome. One or two bits were a little too slick which I can live with because they weren't cheesy. Since we're post-Wire, it's probably going to be hard to find a show that's given that amount of time to tell its story, at least not on a mainstream channel. Perhaps waiting a few years would have helped, or else we simply shouldn't anticipate, or for that matter want, another Wire... Not wanting to harp on The Wire too much, as sometimes get a little precious about it, but it does cast a pretty long shadow.

Wrapped up well though it was obvious what the final few minutes would be

This show was a keeper, I'm disappointed it's gone

I do think Southland certainly has the potential to reach Wire-esque heights, certainly from the police angle at least. I know some people might scoff but the depiction of police work is easily the best I have seen since the Wire ended. The show was messed around with so much by NBC before being cancelled and eventually picked up by TNT so it's taking them time to find their way but season 3 was excellent and I feel season 4 should be a big improvement. However they are very short seasons which is a bit of a problem. All in all I certainly feel it's the best police show since the Wire (I know the Wire wasn't a police show rabble rabble :pac:).

Why can't Shawn Ryan just bring back The Shield? :D Only watched 2 episodes of the Chicago Code but it really hasn't grabbed me anywhere near like the Shield did. It just seems a bit "tame" for a Shawn Ryan production (although the Unit was also pretty much Desperate Housewives set in a military base).

I am so sad to read that this show has been cancelled!

Just finished up watching this, thought it was a great first season only now to discover it's cancelled!! Well at least it didn't leave much in terms of loose ends. I hope Jason Clarke is back on our screens soon!

I'm going to start on Southland now. :)

    You're kidding, it got cancelled?

Jeez, I just start watching it! Have the first (and now, seemingly only) series sky-plussed and started watching yesterday. Thought it was quite good. It's trying to be a bit too much like The Wire, yeah, but it's quite a decent watch.

    Shame.
