My girlfriend's Toshiba laptop died yesterday for no apparent reason with a 'CMOS Battery Failure' message. Now, a CMOS battery failure should allow the laptop to still boot, right? I thought so anyway.

    Symptoms:

    - No reaction at all when power button is pressed
    - CMOS battery had partially come off the mobo (was soldered on, resoldered it)
    - Won't boot off battery or AC power (laptop battery in or out).
    - No amber 'charging' light
    - No green 'external power connected' light
    - AC charger (generic replacement) works fine but varies +/- 1.5 volts either side of correct voltage (voltage is settable and is at correct setting, 19V).
    - DC jack and power cable to mobo is fine (has continuity).
    - Changed RAM & HDD, no difference.

Anyway I'm stumped. I suspect it's the mobo but can't really prove it. And ideas? Also, any suggestions as to where to get this repaired? I've told my gf it's likely to cost more than the price of a good SH laptop to repair, but she likes this one. Alternatively I could get a mobo off eBay, but even they're 200+ Euro!

No I didn't replace the battery, the voltage and amperage are fine so there's no much point. It's only two years old anyway.

He meant did you replace the CMOS battery.

When did you get the cmos battery error.

Was it still booting with the error before you soldered.
You sound like you know what you are doing with the power do you have access to a replacement charger to rule it out completely.

Post the model number of the laptop.

I know, I didn't replace it because both voltage and amperage were fine.

The laptop was left on and charging. It was off when I came back to it. It booted once, showed the error and didn't boot after that.
Was it still booting with the error before you soldered.

    Nope.

Yep, the laptop's not turning on or charging.
Post the model number of the laptop.

    Toshiba Satellite L300-13R
