EU to crack down on cross-border driving offences

Under legislation approved by ministers on Thursday, national authorities in the 27-nation bloc will give one another access to vehicle registration data.

If you commit a serious traffic offense such as speeding, drink driving or no seat belt in France or Spain you now face the music for the offense when you get home.

Good in that it could help crack down on road traffic offenses but bad in that you could be dealing with a corrupt police service abroad bent on abusing their power. We have all heard of those horror stories in Spain. :p

Parliaments in Britain, Ireland and Denmark may still decide not to adopt the law as those countries have opt-outs from the EU's police cooperation.
