There isn't really any "best" place, because classic comics from that era aren't very common so the secondary market tends to be generally for rich collectors.

That being said, there have been a number of large, nicely-put-together collections of crime and horror comics from the 50s - things like the EC Archives, or the Creepy hardcovers collections from Dark Horse, or the collections of Fletcher Hanks comics ("I shall destroy all the civilized planets!" and "You shall die by your own evil creation!"). They're probably a better bet in terms of Christmas presents.

I dunno, they do come up a lot in ebay, but you need to keep your eye out and really need to know what you are looking for.

The early EC's are steep price wise alright. Might be better off choosing a slightly later era, Avengers, Kirby's Fantastic Four etc.,

What titles did you have in mind ?

Fantagraphics have 2 great recent reprint books of Steve Ditko's work that are worth getting. Scans rather than re-coloured.

and the recent Milton Caniff collections are fantastic books -
