our 02 1.9d 206 is getting it very hard to start these cold mornings. there is only a new battery gone into it as the first cold morning killed the old one.. thought a new one would fix it but it stays turning over for ages before it fires.. anyone any ideas?? heater plug light is normal not staying on or anything.. could they be fooked and the light still goes off?

Check the glow plugs....remove the supply cable from all 4 plugs and either meter them out or bring a + supply from the battery and touch off the top of each plugs (Be careful not to touch off the body/engine)...if you get a spark at each plug then there o.k..next you ned to check a 12 volt supply from the glowplug relay.
if your in doubt bring it to a local garage and they will check them for you.
The light will still go out even if the glow plugs are blown.

If 1 or more glow plugs are blown on the 1.9 diesels then it will turn over and over and eventually throw out a blast of smoke on startup.....Great engine tho.....:)

sounds just like it.. also notice the engine moves about alot when statrted then settles down...

It does look like 1 or more glow plugs have failed....once the engine has started and the engine is cold the glow plugs are energised (two at a time) to reduce smoke/running lumpy on start up....Once checked its always best to replace all 4 plugs at a time as the older ones are weaker and can fail within a few weeks.

Not to bad...you will have to remove the air intake pipe to gain access to the plugs...once you get there just remove the supply cable and watch you don't loose the glow plugs nuts that secure the supply cable..after that get a good 12mm (i think) spanner or long socket to remove the glow plugs...:)
Here is a parts diagram of the glow plugs and relay.

Not to hot...maybe let it run for 20mins or so beforehand.
Have a look here..this should be the same as yours...:)
