Peugeot Ptnr Van-Ground clearance in snow -help?

My husband drove a Peugeot partner 800 boxvan for years (since 2002), perfect for his job and recently traded it in for a 2008 (or was it 2009) 1.6 HDI.The van is working great but the problem is the under carriage. He didn't notice at the time of purchase but theres a big white box stuck under the van which affects the ground clearance.

It means he cannot drive it if it snows because its so low down the hard packed snow scrapes off the white box and similar situation in mud or 'rocky' terrain!!!

He's really annoyed about this and the 'dealer' just didnt want to know.
Thought I'd ask you guys if you have any ideas/suggestions about :
1)Can we get rid of the box without causing damage to the van?
    (why is it there anyway?)
2)If not, any way of raising the ground clearance e.g bigger tyres/wheels?

I'm totally clueless about all this stuff so forgive my ignorance please:confused:

Is this white box to the front or rear of the van...?
Maybe post up a picture of it...?

You need to find out what this 'box' is.
